NO-NEWS FLASH!!
April 5th 2011 23:31
I have only one thing to say about Charlie Sheen's latest insanity, DUH! Was anyone surprised?! Keep moving, no news here.
Which brings me to the media's coverage of "news" with regards to celebrities. They seem to have an affinity for ear-catching phrases. I guess you could call it media license.
However I have yet to be "surprised", "shocked", or even "amazed", that John or Jane Rockstar admitted to drug abuse. Ms. Starlette Wannabe made a sex tape. Mr. Superstar Athlete has entered rehab for sex addiction. Ms. Soon-To-Be Has-Been got caught for shoplifting. Not-So-Real Reality Star's nude photo's have suddenly emerged. I Use-To-Be Famous got arrested for DWI. Mr. & Mrs. America's Sweethearts are divorcing . . . yada yada yada.
I haven't been surprised, shocked, amazed or even mildly troubled since Rock Hudson announced he had AIDS. Actually I was more sad than anything else. But "in those days" celebrities were—to some degree—able to keep their private lives private. So when something leaked out, you weren't familiar with the back-story, therefore surprising—dare I say shocking—you with new information. And what is "news", but new information.
In today's freelance paparazzi world, we not only know the back-stories of so called celebrities, we know the here and now story. We know what they are wearing (or not wearing), eating, smoking, drinking, driving, blogging, texting, and tweeting. TMI? I think so. Destructive, detrimental, disturbing? Absolutely.
The only thing that surprises, shocks or amazes me today, is that anyone & everyone can be a celebrity. The more outrageous the behavior, the bigger they are. The bigger they are the harder they fall. And you know what happens when they fall, it's on you-tube within moments. Making them even more of a celebrity.
I get nostalgic for the "Old Hollywood" era. When they were called "Movie Stars" and you knew all you needed to know about a Movie Star, from seeing them on the big screen. A time when everything was perfectly wonderful, and stars didn't fall. I may have oversimplified, but then again maybe not. I can't say because I don't know their back-stories. Thank goodness.
