Nobel Prize Ruined in the 21st Century!
February 6th 2008 01:19
The Nobel Peace Prize is probably the most prestigious award a person can receive.
The prize, awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Institute, is an annual celebration of the person or persons who have the most positive and profound influence on the progression of mankind.
In 2007 the award was rightfully given to former US presidential candidate, Albert Gore, for his work with the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change and historically, barring a few unimaginable winners, including former Israeli Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres and former US President Jimmy Carter, the award is generally presented to people who Alfred Nobel himself would be proud to see receive his award.
Now, no matter what you think of him, I see Al Gore as an acceptable recipient of the award. He has dedicated 20 years to the science of climate change and has been integral in getting the world to focus on practical solutions to the industrial world’s destruction of the planet.
No problems there, but what baffled me about the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony was the amount of pop singers, movie stars and celebrities present. US actors, Uma Thurman and Kevin Spacey hosted the ceremony and presented the award to Gore and Kylie Minogue, Annie Lennox and Alicia Key performed pop songs throughout the ceremony.
Is this not meant to be the Nobel Peace Prize! This isn’t some bloody pop gala performance featuring a cameo by Mr. Gore. This is meant to be a night dedicated to celebrating the achievements of people who work for the positive progression of mankind – Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Aung San Suu Kyi and Mother Teresa – not pop singers and movie stars.
The award, named after Swedish born scientist and humanitarian, Alfred Nobel, is supposed to be a celebration of the positive influence that man can have on the world - not an entertainment spectacular. Nothing seems to be sacred anymore. The 21st Century has turned everything into glorified commercialism. I was only naively hoping that maybe the Nobel Peace Prize could be free from such demons. I was wrong.

The peace prize I find usually goes where it is needed but in the other prizes some absolute looneys have won things for science.
