No true discipleship without the Word

Most people who are involved in church leadership recognize that generally speaking; the church is filled with many converts, but very few disciples – at least disciples according to the Biblical definition. Do we as church leaders even know and understand what it means to be a biblical disciple of Jesus Christ in the 21st century?
The word “disciple” has far deeper implications than its literal meaning of "a learner or a student"; it is someone who has made a total commitment of their life to the training and teaching of a master or a school of thought. Not only are they trained, they live out their training in everyday life.
Unfortunately, the Word has become a superficial component in the lives of many believers. Can we say that we are committed disciples of Jesus if we have no interest in what He has to say through His Word? Jesus said, "If you abide in my Word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” John 8:31-32. What did Jesus just say? Abiding in the Word is a mark of true discipleship.
Why is the Word so important? God speaks to us though His Word, but only when we read or hear it. We cannot read or hear the Word through avoiding or ignoring it. Why would we avoid or ignore the Word? It has lost its value in the lives of many people; including professing believers. Value is lost when we read or hear the Word, but change its intent to fit our whims or we ignore it and go on with life as if we did not hear a word.
