No fear in love

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."
- I John 4:18 (King James Version of the Bible).
Today's fast-paced, me-first American society has warped our definition of what true love really is. It is important to note, as I Corinthians chapter 13 reminds us, that real love isn't about what you can get from it. It is instead about what you can give to it. This more selfless definition of love encourages us to look beyond ourselves and our own selfish needs and desires and to seek the greater good.
Now, I know what you are thinking because I struggle with the same thing.... if I give and give and give to others, then how will I take care of my own needs. A funny thing happens, however, when we reach out to others. It gives us a different perspective of our own problems. Suddenly we see that the world is much bigger than our immediate day to day lives. We have so many opportunities, so many chances to change what happens around us. When we have a different perspective it helps us to re-prioritize our own lives.
Here is an example of how the love perspective connects to our living life more freely....A person works and works their whole life trying to get ahead in the job market. He or she doesn't care who they have to back stab, sleep with or otherwise hurt in order to climb their way to the top. He or she lives life in fear, always trying to watch their back, knowing that other people are also out to get them, trying to steal that next promotion or client or get that better car, etc. They end up lonely, hurt and miserable, for what? A few dollars. Oh no, those dollars are all going to the credit card bills. They thought things could fill the empty void inside that only love, real love could fill. On the contrary, however, picture someone who has a rewarding career helping the needy. Certainly, they may be tired and discouraged at times, but at least they know that they are living life for someone other than themselves.
