The Bridge to Terrabithia

December 18th 2010 17:58

Basic Storyline:

Life is boring and ordinary for Jess. He is the target of bullies, his older sisters are always annoying to him... life is so bad for him that he had to wear his sister's pink-striped hand-me-down shoes to school. (Although he colored-in the stripes with a black permanent marker so it was disguised... well... somewhat disguised.) He hates his life and 7th grade, that is, until comes to town. Not only is she the most amazing person he had ever met, but she quickly becomes the best friend he ever had. She teaches him about life, about friendship, and about the qualities of the human imagination.

Review:
A truly amazing story. I had never read the Newberry Award winning novel of the same name, further, I had never heard of it. When I first saw the trailer on television, I thought it was going to be a copy-cat Narnia movie. I was wrong. What I found when I watched it was a story both simple and complex. You remember how it was when you were a child. You were always worried about what others would think, at the same time, you are trying to learn about the real world. The use of imagination with the main characters when they cross their "magical rope bridge" and the way Leslie puts their enemies (bullies from school) into their imaginary world and brings Jess into it is wonderful. This is a movie where you really care about the characters. You will come away wishing Terrabithia was the real world, and remembering when it was real for you as a child.

Tron (1982)

Tron (1982)

Basic Storyline:
Kevin Flynn (Bridges) hacks into the mainframe at his job where he was recently fired. He knows there is some impropriety going on at ENCOM (prophetic of ENRON?) and wants to expose it. However, the security system set up within the computer attacks him and brings him into the computer generated world of the Master Control. Other "programs" populate this world and the belief in the "users" (God to these programs) is suppressed. Tron fights for his freedom and the freedom of those under the dictatorial hand of the Master Control.

Review:
Although not the first film to use CGI (that distinction goes to a little known film from 1971 called "Metadata") Tron is widely considered to be the father of the next generation of effects. I may be mistaken, but I believe it was the first film to use 32bit special effects. Anyway, the storyline is ahead of its time and worth watching, if you can find a copy. Disney released the film shortly before the new Tron Legacy was released. However, no one seems to have a copy. The only place I have been able to find it is a 20th anniversary special addition and it retails fo $79.00. (Not too many copies of that left either.) I've given the link above just below the picture just in case you're interested.
Good movie by 1982 standards. Original storyline. Jeff Bridges did a little over-acting in it, but that was the style of the early 80's anyway, so it does not detract from the plot. I would recommend watching this movie, just remember... the effects were top-notch for the time. Watch the trailer below!
