The grocery store of the future

October 23rd 2007 12:00
It's post apocalyptic. There's a bunch of rednecks toting their guns talking about something to do with doing stuff for god and for country. There's a bunch of hippies who think they have attained global consciousness and feel they are living in harmony with the earth, they have merely come to fix their connection tower, which is a radiotower, but it is a live tree. There are some previously great corporations, finding going a little tough without all their privileges.

You shop at the local grocery store, but it is not indoors, it is not on a street, it is not out in the open. It is a patch of the woods where all sorts of foods are grown. A small pond surrounded closely by some tiny trees, the whole area is covered with what looks like a morning mist, indeed it is quite cold over there, and that is where all sorts of cold fresh vegetables are growing there. The whole area is a bunch of different micro-climates, each with a budding bounty of delicious delights, all abuzz with the movement of the shopers, human and non-human alike. There are some gluttons who never leave. But this is not any shop you would ever recognise, indeed if you went there you would not know you were in a shop. You would look around and see everybody eating and carrying things about the shop, but you would never see anybody pay for anything

the possibility of an island

Are you sitting comfortably? I think it's important. So many people sit at their computers at a desk on an office chair. What, are you at work? Do you sit in front of the TV like that? Do you sit like that at a picnic? Do you sit like that when you are hanging out with your friends? Do you sit like that when you are having a good time? I'm not saying that posture effects your state of mind, I'm saying that it is an indicator of your state of mind, allows us to see what assumptions you are holding about your situation.

As you read these words, as you hear them sounding in your head, who is talking? You or me? We would tend to say that it's me talking, I wrote the words, after all. But this would seem strange on further inspection, since the voice is decidedly in your head. It is unmistakably your voice, your tone, your emphasis, your brain. If it is me talking, then I am talking from within you, as you. Am I performing some form of telepathy? Using my mind to alter your mind? This is precisely what communication is, but we don't often think of it in this way, we think of my brain with an arrow to my throat and lungs with an arrow coming out of my mouth and into your ear and to your brain. But really the two brains are affecting each other directly, they need not be mediated by successive compressions of air, or the variations between a small snippet of the EM spectrum, except by a fluke of evolution these evolved as a way of perceiving things. If we had an organ which could produce controlled pulses of EM waves, not necessarily in the visible light range, just like we have organs for creating waves of air, and if we had an organ for perceiving those waves and taking messages about the waves into the brain, just as we have for vibrations in the air, then we'd have a whole new way of talking to each other

Animation script

the setting, a permaculture forest.

The chicken walked decidedly into frame, pecking at the ground, and moving about as if in a day dream. But as you see closer into the chicken's eye it seems to flash with the thought that it may be daydreaming. As the picture zooms out from the chicken's eye it slows and allows the focus to come to the sliver of a child's eye poking out from behind the base of a tree. The Child reddies herself and swiftly moves to grab the chicken which springs to action, avoiding capture in a flurry of screeches and bustling feathers
