News Hound - by JD Martin

While being enlightened by the morning news today about the current state of humanity, I witnessed a story involving protesters and a logging truck. So in light of this act of stupidity I feel it necessary to point out a few home-truths regarding some well-published views of environment activism.

It is a well known fact that most environmentalists are opposed to the mining industry. Be it coal mining, oil refineries, metal ore or uranium, you name it they’re opposed to it. But what they fail to understand is that the raw materials gained from these mining operations are the building blocks for many of the creature comforts we as a society enjoy.

The coal mining industry, for example, controls the primary resources needed to produce electricity in this country. Without coal, our society would be very much in the dark. Literally. While more eco-friendly ways of generating power are becoming more available (wind power and solar energy), they simply do not have the output capacity needed to sustain our energy hungry society.

This brings us to nuclear power. Australia has only one functional nuclear facility, which does not produce power, and if left to the environmentalists never will. The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is the primary source for cancer fighting drugs in this country. Without the uranium necessary to power such a reactor, many people with early stage, curable cancers would have little hope of survival. And with the rate of cancer rapidly rising, this nuclear facility could one day be helping you or someone you love, if it hasn’t already.

There have also been recent discussions regarding the viability of nuclear power stations in Australia. The argument for all parties opposed to such a move can be summarised in one word. Chernobyl. The world’s greatest nuclear disaster has paved the way for anti-nuclear campaigners everywhere. The Chernobyl meltdown is a fine argument for stopping these power stations if you ignore all the evidence surrounding the situation. Technology in this field has come a long way in thirty years, isn’t it time to reassess the argument on this one?

The cars we all drive are fuelled by the oil industry, the metal manufactured to build the cars is produced by, and you guessed it, the mining industry. Without it we would still be living in caves and travelling but horse drawn cart. Well that is, if the greenie’s let us have the logs to build the cart of course. So the next time you flick on a light switch, hop in a car to get from A to B or are admiring that newly built bookshelf, remind yourself where it all started, before jumping on the bandwagon to cut your own throat.

City Rail have discovered the ultimate way to control a crowd: freeze them into a sound sleep.

Working on the same principle as the cryogenics chamber people are now using to return to life in the future, City Rail are freezing commuters in a bid to limit morning cheerfulness. “People don’t want to be bothered by happy people while travelling to work, so we have devised a way to silence cheery commuters during the busy rush hour periods”, a spokesman for the campaign has said.

City Rail believes that once the commuter is in contact with the icy conditions they are less likely to interact with others. Instead all excess energy is consumed by trying to stave off the urge to rub the eyes, which leads to drowsy brain function and eventually, sleep.

How are they achieving this obligatory mind control you may ask? Well instead of the more conspicuous use of liquid nitrogen, they have employed the expertise of the humble air conditioner. This far more subtle approach to crowd control has led to wide spread sleeping among commuters, and has reduced morning pleasantries by 42%.

There is of course, a group of concerned scientists working on a counter-attack to City Rail’s scheme of misery. They have recently released details of the only known cure to air conditioner poisoning. It involves a quick injection of a stimulant known only as “Espresso” and is currently being trialled at a Gloria Jeans near you.

During one of many visits to my favourite book store in central Sydney, I stumbled across a title that demanded my attention. Almost five years on from the tragic and malicious murder of Wall Street Journal correspondent, Daniel Pearl, it was with morbid curiosity that I purchased this novel. If only I had known at the time of the profound after effect the events of his mans final days would leave on my memory, I may not have had the courage to read past page one. And I would be the lesser for it.

After reading “Who Killed Daniel Pearl” (written by Bernard-Henri Levy) I felt compelled to put a face to the name. I believe someone who dies in such formidable circumstances has earned this much recognition at the very least.

Daniel Pearl in the physical form struck me at first viewing, as a man who had, at one time or another, known true happiness. His effervescent smile held the memories of a man who lived for every moment he was granted. The perception I gained from his photographs made the brutality and horror of his death all the more difficult to comprehend.

While searching for the images of the living Daniel Pearl, I came across a site that is still to this day broadcasting the terrorists film of his murder. As the details of Pearl’s death were well publicised at the time, and the grotesque nature of his demise graphically described in newspaper articles around the globe, I was astonished that anyone would want to confirm the mental images that they conveyed. Even in a moment of detached curiosity I could not bring myself to view something so vile.

And that is exactly what the people responsible for Pearl’s murder set out to achieve. Fear is the most effective weapon in any war, as its message is universal. Regardless of race, colour or creed, the one thing that binds us all is human nature. It’s human nature to fear what is not understood, and for many of us, the purpose of this type of vilification will never be something we can fully grasp.

These extremists are prepared to murder and make an example of anyone with a differing opinion to their own, all in the name of religion. In all the research I have undertaken, I am still to find a single religion that condones the killing of innocent people in order to communicate a view point. By the final page of Levy’s book your left shaking your head at the utter contempt these people have for the human race, and at just how far we really are from finding a little common ground.
