New England Patriots SB XLVI Preview
January 31st 2012 21:20
This Sunday the New England Patriots will try and add to their trophy collection with a fourth Lombardi Trophy. This is there first time back to the big game since 2008 when they lost to the New York Giants and their fifth since 2001. The 2008 Patriots are the best team to never win the super bowl as they entered that game undefeated. Then in week 9 of this season the Giants beat the Patriots 24-20, and since that loss the Patriots have not lost a game. With only one game left, will the Patriots be able break their losing habit to the Giants?
The biggest key to victory for the Patriots is protecting Tom Brady. With Rob Gronkowski still day-to-day from the high ankle sprain he suffered in the AFC Championship game, Brady is going to need to time to find his other targets. Wes Welker is going to have to find ways to get open on the outside, while the other tight end Aaron Hernandez will have to become the new beast over the middle.
The Giants defensive line is good enough to put pressure on Brady without a blitz. The offensive line will have to work harder especially since there is no real threat of a running game from the Patriots. The Giants defensive ends are going to be able to pin their ears back and just come after Brady. But this is were Welker is going to have to come up big with quick screen passes to the outside. He is going to have to gain tough yards on a defensive that is fast to the ball.
Defensively the New England Patriots are going to be tested to the max. The Giants have a strong passing game, and the Patriots are the 31st overall ranked pass defense. The safety's of the Patriots are going to have to play disciplined football. The Giants do have a running game and thrive off of play action, with the always present threat of a deep ball. The defensive line can make plays on the two bruising Giants running backs, as the past two games they did just that to the Broncos and the Ravens.
The New England Patriots will have sixty minutes on Sunday to prove the Giants don't have their number in big games. The game is going to be a passing battle from the beginning. The Patriots are going to have to be able to move the ball with the possibility Tom Brady's favorite target in Rob Gronkowski being sidelined. With the game in a dome points will be scored by this high power offense. It will be up to the Patriot defense to stop the big plays of the Giants. If they can do this look for another New England Patriots Super Bowl victory.
