New 1000px wide format

May 7th 2008 09:31
Many websites are now moving to a 1000px wide format as most people have monitors wide enough to accommodate them.

So I've introduced a 1000px double column format for the Orble blogs.

You can see an example on this ZCars post.

This format will also load more quickly in Internet Explorer because I've redone some of the HTML code to cater to brain-dead microsoft programmers. It's still in beta, however if no bugs appear in the near future I will make it the default for new Orble blogs and create equivalent wide versions of the other formats.

To choose this shiny new format go to your blog's Modify page and under the Format section choose the Ads in Text - Wide Double Col Blog format.

If you do notice any bugs please let me know.

Thanks,
Jon.

I tried it for photography tips, seems to work but the title enlarged and I now think it looks rather ugly.

Hey Katyzzz,

I have wide screen and checked your Photography Tips page and it looks really nice. Maybe if you centred the text on your header it would be more proportioned but your looks site looks good. I like it in wide screen, it looks chic.

Geeky blog went off the page, Jon. I had to turn it back.

The title is larger, I'll look into that and see what's happening.

Sounds like you are working on a rather small screen techno? What is your screen's resolution? Rather un-techno of you

Jon, I believe techno has the same screen as mine, back to u, honcho, one of those little bugs you were talking about.

Thanks for that , Cheryl, yes, I think it looks nice too, but I'll wait until Jon has a look at his little bugs first, lest I further complicate the situation.

Sometimes it takes more than is immediately apparent, I think techno's problem is a result of the particular server he's on.

I am going to wait for the 'big boys' to fix things. After all if it's to be compulsory they'll want it working well for everyone

Jon, Mspaintart.com heading, same problem, plus ads background will probably need changing, but I'll wait until you've had a chance to check things, I do not intend, at this stage to alter anything else to the wide format, but I do not want to change any of the looks I've discovered already or it will confuse your bug pursuit.

When we hear more, I'll try a few others.

I'm not rushing you, just letting you know.

Beautiful, except for the title - I changed postmoderncritic and I think the same thing happened as did to katyzzz's title.

Well done, I've been waiting for this option!!

I've just fixed the title problem and should be able to upload the change by tomorrow.

Okay, my titles for postmoderncritic.com and relativitywatch.com are okay now - I just changed the size of the font through the 'advanced themes' section.
I'm really happy with this format, the blogs look even more sophisticated now!

I've just uploaded the fix so you will need to change your heading settings back pmc -- sorry

Let me know if you notice any more problems.

Jon, I like it and I changed flickwit, but now when I visit other sites, incuding this post, the column that is supposed to be on the right hand side appears down the bottom of the page, under this centre bit, and the side is just blank.

Hi Jon,

Nice option. I will stick to the classic thiner option, but I still would like some good option for the header. It should be optimized to load a ny header, even though it almost works by changing the whole thing right now. I sitll get a black square over it in IE at least.

Thanks,

peeker

Michaelie -- is it still like that? It should be fixed now. Thanks for letting me know.

Peeker -- I'm still working on the thinner formats. There seems to be a problem with overflow under IE. Hopefully will have it fixed soon.

This post for example, but it's all my posts before last week. And some posts of others, though I can't remember which. This post isn't doing it now.

I think this is fixed, but now when I go to the hompage, all the excerpts of posts are squeezed out between the side columns, appearing below them, at the bottom. I went to the home page from two different places over the last few days and it's still doing this.

Michaelie -- can you send me a screenshot? It all looks fine to me. I'd really appreciate it.

Jon.

Sorry, I can't work out how to make a screen shot...

The columns at the side are OK but the post excerpts are displaying at the bottom of them, as if there is not enough room.

I don't want you to go to any trouble if it is just me, but I don't think it is. No other site I visit displays wrong like this. My laptop is pretty new and as I said I checked on a friend's PC as well. Maybe both our screens aren't big enough or something, but if that's the case, it must be the case for quite a few people, which would be annoying for them.

Thanks Michaelie -- I think it's to do with using an older version of IE. I'll see if I can come up with a fix.

Thanks.
