NBL - Think-tank Plans Ahead
The biggest names in Australian basketball will be gathering under one roof this weekend to come up with the next stage strategy for the future of the NBL and basketball in general down under.
Chairperson's and CEO's from every team in the NBL, WNBL and major state and territory leagues will become a massive mind of majestic magic ... or something like that. No doubt much of the chit chat will focus on rebuilding basketball in sydney following the return of the Kings, along with the new free to air era on the horizon for the NBL and what that will do for the sport money and advertising wise.
It sounds as if this will be a yearly event for a while, which is great for the sport. Not only can each key player in the local market speak their mind within a forum, but it's a team building strategy. Everyone gets on the same page and aims for the same results, unlike say european football where the lower end teams fight to live every day. It's something the NBL did have a problem with a few years back, but here's hoping the financial woes of years past are just that, a distant memory long forgotten.
Hopefully they'll also consider further restructure of each league in other states, including Brisbane. The NBL is on the right track, but the WNBL has lost a lot of momentum in recent years too. Perth readers may remember back in the olden days, where each Wildcats game was preceded by a WNBL encounter. As much as the woman's league likes to stand on its own two feet, a partnership of some sort would be worthwhile looking into, if only to get more people in the doors and more interest in the woman's side of the coin. Besides, the Opals are a national treasure, world champs and olympic silver medalists how many times now? Three? Where's the love for that?!
