The wedding cake goes back as far as the Roman Empire. Through the years, it has become the focus of a variety of customs and traditions. Around 1900 years ago, the Romans began baking wheat and salt into a small cake to be eaten. During the ceremony, the groom would eat part of this cake and then break the rest over his bride's head. They were made of wheat, a symbol of fertility and prosperity and taken as a sign of good fortune and a blessing for long life and many children.

Benefits of few beverages

January 22nd 2009 14:07
Water: Plain water with a slice of lemon or any citrus fruit slice is refreshing and removes the monotony of drinking plain water.
Milk, milkshake, buttermilk: Low fat dairy milk and buttermilk are healthy beverage alternatives. Milkshakes made with fresh fruit and/or dry fruits provide proteins and calcium along with some vitamins. If you are lactose intolerant, suffer from chronic upper respiratory infections or have asthma, try soymilk instead of dairy milk.
Juice: Fresh fruit juice contains the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that fresh fruits contain. The only difference is that the juice doesn't contain fibre. After a sport or a vigorous workout, fresh fruit juice is a good fluid-replacer and energiser.
Fresh vegetable juice or soup is a great low calorie choice, which provides antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Though it contains very low amounts of fibre, it's great for hydration.
Tea: Herbal tea made with thyme, peppermint, chamomile, basil or jasmine is soothing and hydrating.

Premature balding

January 20th 2009 14:50
A recent study conducted on balding men suggests that they place such high importance to hair, that they would be willing to even exchange a very valuable possession for it. For most men, baldness is a sign of old age. Hair loss is no longer just due to hereditary and hormonal reasons. Stress, scalp infections, wrong haircare and travelling pave the way for premature baldness. This is again not restricted to men alone, modern times have not spared women either. Worst affected are mothers between the age group of 25 to 35 years who have been trying to do all work, maintain a home, relationship and raise children. The only way to control hair loss is to know how and why it started in the first place. This is where diagnosis tests like Tricho Analysis and professional advice play a key role. Early detection not only reverses hair loss but can help hair growth as well.

Does slicing onions make us cry?

January 20th 2009 13:49
When your knife slices through a crisp onion, it tears through cells, releasing the cells' contents. Chemicals react to produce a sulfur-based gas. Once the gas contacts the water coating your eyes, it forms sulfuric acid, a fiery irritant. To rid your peepers of the intruder, your tear ducts work overtime. If you aren't game for sporting googles in the kitchen , trying moving your face farther way from the onion so the gas disperses before reaching your eyes.

What is the origin of the saying, "You can only take a horse to the water but you can't make it drink"?
This proverbs means that if you want to help a person, you can only offer the person suitable advice or show her or him an opportunity, but it is wrong to expect the person to follow the advice or seize the opportunity, because a person does not do any thing unless she or he really wants to do it. The proverb must have been based on the observation that an animal does not drink water unless it is really feeling thirsty, no matter how close you take it to water. According to some sources, the proverb is of Rwandan origin. In English, it appeared first in a book on proverbs written by John Heywood in 1546. The form of the saying in the above book was "A man maie well bring a horse to the water, but he cannot make him drinke without he will." The wording of the proverb changed over the years and it assumed its current form in the mid-nineteenth century.

What is a Flophouse?

January 13th 2009 15:34
A flophouse is a place of cheap lodging. It is normally an apartment where some occupants pay rent while others are unemployed and do nothing with their lives except party and abuse drugs. The people who use these places are often called transients, although some people stay in them for years. They are just a step above being homeless. Occupants of the flophouse generally share bathroom facilities and reside in very cramped quarters. Quarters in flophouses are very small. In the past, flophouses were called working men's hotel and were rather dirty. Some city districts that currently have or once had flophouses in abundance became well-known in their own right.
