Cats and Mice

January 5th 2011 05:54
I'm wondering if any other people out there have the same problem I have. I live in the country, the northern part of the Greater Adelaide area, and I simply can't keep mice out of my house.

I have creatures living in the house who are supposed to help keep the rodents out, or at least kill the beggars if they come in. But they don't do there job!

I've heard mice in the kitchen, the great hunter strolls over for a bit of a look, then strolls back to me, tail n the air, totally not fussed.

A friend said I should stop feeding and let them eat only mice until the problem is over. That doesn't seem right to me, although I do remember my dear old Dad saying the same thing.

I ignored that, but now, I'm starting to wonder... What do other people think - Starve the cat until it learns to hunt properly, or feed the cat and hope the mice just go away?

Kitty on the Prowl

December 28th 2010 04:24
Have you seen the amazing range of toys and furniture that people are willing to buy their beloved feline? Squeaky toys, scratching posts, and so much more.

It all costs up to thousands of dollars, all to keep kitty happy. I know what I would like most though if I was a real cat, I'd like my freedom! All of the tall scratching posts and poles with carpet attached wouldn't make up for the lack of freedom.

I'm glad I'm not a cat, just as I'm glad I'm not a prisoner locked up in jail. Cats these days, in Australia in particular, are kept indoors these days. Cat's have been shown to be super efficient predators and soft hearted cat owners feel forced to decide between their pussy cat's freedom and the lives of native animals.

What would you do, or what do you do, with your own pussy cat - let it roam free like a good cat should, or keep it inside in its own palace of things to climb and scratch and play with?

I think I know what your cat would rather do!

Cat-like Dogs

December 5th 2010 05:01
If you ever decide to get a dog, or the family is demanding a dog, look at the 'Hound' group of dogs.

This group includes a wide range of dogs, from Beagles to Afghan Hounds and a wide variety in between. The reason I recommend dogs from this group, rather than perhaps the 'Terrier' group or 'Working Dog' group is this reason:
Hounds, especially 'sight' hounds, have quite a few cat-like characteristics.

Most sight hounds don't like getting wet, they can be very aloof with strangers, they clean themselves thoroughly and I hate to say it, but they don't always pay attention to what their people want them to do.

I know some people with Pharaoh Hounds and when I see their dogs hunting birds or other creatures, and just ignoring their owners, I think of cats, not dogs.

So if you have to get a dog, try one of the hounds. Like cats, you have a range of colours and hair lengths to choose from.

My friends have a website with photos of their dogs have a look

While you're their, you may read some disturbing things about the dogs, and it may be enough to make you change your mind about getting any canine at all!

Poor Pussy Cat

I read this article recently in the local newsletter - it's scary stuff! There are young children living on my street, and kids can be even more curious than a cat!

Redbanks News – Don’t let your pets wander – it’s not safe

A Poem for Kitty Lovers

November 30th 2010 22:42
My dear friend Carolyn Cordon has different ideas about cats than I have. This is one of the nicer poems Carolyn has written about cats - she has one poem about running over a cat with her car. She swears she would never do it, but I'm watching her!

Anyway, this is a nicer poem than the other one

Some people are very strange

cat dancing
what was he thinking?

I found this site and I strongly recommend you go and have a look at it. People and cats are dancing together in very stylized ways, and it's hard to tell who is in charge

The Cat's Meow

Cats are such interesting creatures, don't you think? Sure, dogs are loyal and loving and all that, but cats are the ones given God status in Ancient Egypt!

Cats have kept that status, to a large degree, and they still refuse to do the loyal servant stuff that dogs do so well
