Cats and Mice

I'm wondering if any other people out there have the same problem I have. I live in the country, the northern part of the Greater Adelaide area, and I simply can't keep mice out of my house.
I have creatures living in the house who are supposed to help keep the rodents out, or at least kill the beggars if they come in. But they don't do there job!
I've heard mice in the kitchen, the great hunter strolls over for a bit of a look, then strolls back to me, tail n the air, totally not fussed.
A friend said I should stop feeding and let them eat only mice until the problem is over. That doesn't seem right to me, although I do remember my dear old Dad saying the same thing.
I ignored that, but now, I'm starting to wonder... What do other people think - Starve the cat until it learns to hunt properly, or feed the cat and hope the mice just go away?
