Natural Beauty TIps

A lot of earth-friends are going greener in all areas of life these days, including their beauty care regimens. SELF magazine’s March issue offers some valuable tips on going natural and glowing at the same time (Jenna Mahoney, pp.51-55).
1. Use earth-friendly methods of washing. It’s so easy to use a disposable wipe to remove make-up and cleanse skin, but think of where that wipe is going after you’ve used it for 10 seconds. That’s right- the landfill. Now think of all the women using one of those wipes every day, and that adds up to a lot of trash. Try using a natural fiber washcloth, like those made from bamboo, instead of that throw-away cloth.
2. Save water. How long do you stand under the shower basking in the warm water? It may feel good while you’re doing it, but the earth is feeling bad afterward. Taking latty-dah showers wastes water and costs you more money. Try this: get wet, turn off the water while you lather up with shampoo and body wash, and then turn the shower back on to rinse off the soap.
3. “It would take two trees 10 years to absorb the carbon dioxide you create from blow-drying your hair 10 minutes a day for one year.” Yikes! Use a towel to dry your hair, and give it time to air-dry. Use a hair dryer only for styling hair after it is mostly dry. This is not only better for the environment, but your frazzled strands will thank you, too.
4. Use a cup of chamomile tea to tame red skin. Brew a cup and then let it cool. Pour the contents into a small spray bottle and mist your skin with the tea. This acts as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.
5. Lose the wrinkles. Use this recipe to exfoliate and liven up skin: a handful of crushed almonds, one orange peel, and one cup of grapeseed oil mixed together in a blender. Rub the scrub on your skin and see the natural glow shine through.
