on First Impressions- Torchwood

August 28th 2007 00:38
My advice, don't bother. I watched 2 eps of Torchwood, being a huge fan of the new (and old) Dr. Who, and found it flawed and uninspiring. Far too much Dues Ex Machina in every episode. The first 5 minutes of the first ep were so very promising too. And to Harkness surviving the Dalek invasion....in Torchwood, he's invulnerable (immortal?), he gets shot in the head (in the first ep), but immediately stands up to arrest his murderous colleague.

"Hush" is my all time number one episode of any series I've seen, closely followed by "Once more, With Feeling" and "Smile Time" from Whedon's other hugely successful spin off series Angel. The thing I love most about Joss Whedon (and the other members of his writing team, Greenwalt, Minear, et al) is he tries to break a lot of new ground other script writers wouldn't dare to tread on. So many of the series on TV these days are too formulaic and pedestrian. The writers of Buffy and Angel (and Firefly) weren't afraid to break the rules, combining tradegy and comedy all within the same line in a lot of cases. Personally, anyone that doesn't find Buffy, Angel (or Firefly) intriguing and compelling viewing needs their heads read!

p.s. Great retro review
