Ranting Rebecca - The Soapbox

Welcome to The Soapbox. This is the place where I go to calm my nerves after a particularly frustrating event, episode or just something small that has been giving me the sh*ts. Feel free to join in the rant. I feel your pain, really I do. I also guarantee that you will feel better for it.

My voice sounds like a man's!!!

October 29th 2007 02:00

I know this may be a stupid topic to write about, but I just had to record myself saying something, and when I heard it played back, I was horrified - I sound like a man!!! I didn't know this until then, because that's not how my voice sounds to me when I speak. To me I have a voice that's not masculine, but not too feminine; to me it is just right. But to hear it played back to me and to find out for all these years what I have heard coming out of my mouth is not how other people hear me, well it's just plain upsetting. Has anyone else had a moment where they realized something that they always though were right is actually wrong? This is a massive revelation for me; I don't want to talk anymore for fear of people mistaking me for a drag queen.

The reason I was recording my voice in the first place was for a automated response for a phone number, I am still wondering why they wanted me to do it considering my voice is so horrible. It's mortifying to hear your voice played loudly over speakers again and again while the IT boys try to make the phone system work. Of course, they think it's hilarious and told me so, so I told them if they didn't shut up I would stick the microphone that I recorded the horribleness with up their backsides. I'm nice like that, it's how I roll. So anyway, I am horrified, mortified and all those other descriptive words about how my voice sounds. I think paranoid may also be a good one to add to that list. My boss assured me that my voice doesn't actually sound like that. Bull Sh*t!!!! I freaking just heard it, of course it sounds like that. So that's what I'm ranting about today, finding something out that you've always thought to be right is actually wrong. Anyone else had this happen to them???
