My Orchids Have Started to Bloom

August 16th 2009 09:06
With Helen's amazing garden post I felt inspired to try and walk outside today after spending 5hrs writing Orble articles. It was then that I realised Sydney did get most of its predicted hot weather today so I walked around my little garden and found that one of my orchids had burst into bloom.

JK's Orchids

I have no idea at all what type they are or there technical name - I just think they are beautiful.

JK's Orchids

This one came from my great, but recently absent friend, Carrie and her cool parents. They moved from a mega big backyard house to a unit, known as The Castle, this massive ex castle overlooking the harbour at Mosman - amazing place. But they couldn't take the orchid with them and said it had never really flowered for few years.

I think it was just sitting in the wrong place in their old backyard. I have never changed the soil, I have however orchid fertilised it and water it semi regularly. Placed it next to my front door and I get two or three flowering episodes from it a year. It is also growing its base bulbs and each flowering gives me an extra shoot of flowers. Although this time it only flowered two stalks as opposed to what should be 4 shoots. A stupid bloody pool cleaner guy broke one on his brash walk to get to the pool in the backyard so this week I get an amazing stalk in my bedroom and this one pictured remains at the front yard.

Anyways - I hope this hasn't been too self indulgent And by the way I am not a mean snob having a dig at pool guys - I sublet an apartment underneath a young couple who rent out the whole property and the real estate pay for the pool guy. And he is in his 50's GODDAMNIT - where is the hot early 20's pool guy from all the Hollywood movies I have watched - damn you all to hell.............

Jason, I've worked in a orchid farm during my college's summer break. Based on the appearance, I think it's a subspecies of Phalaenopsis. The scientific name Phalaenopsis schillerana!

Mine too! I received an orchid plant as a gift from some work mates when my brother passed away. It had three shoots, two of which opened a few weeks ago. We put those ones on my brothers grave and now the third one has started to bloom too. I'm not much of a green thumb but I'm taking care of this plant like its my baby. Orchids will now forever remind me of my little brother. Thanks for this post.

these are absolutely stunning, orchids are my favorite but I tend to kill everything green so I've given up.

Wilson - WOW - thanks. My stepdad stayed last night and he said the same thing. Thank you!!

Lara - thanks. I keep changing the water in the vase and chopping off 5mm a day and still no change after 4 days so hopefully I will get a couple of weeks out of them

Ruby - sorry to hear about your brother and what a beautiful thing to remember him by. For the best care of the orchids from my past experience - it's all about position. Once you get that right then let them do their thing. They don't like to be pampered too much. Regular weeding, fertiliser and minimal watering - excpet in summer and voila - they do their thing. I have this one rare purple orchid I got about 12yrs ago from Coles in Surry Hills (believe it or not) - it has cascading flowers when it flowers and last month mum and I broke it up into 8 smaller pots and they are all shooting - I am massively excited. But these ones go sick on me if I so much as pay them attention.

Risa - ignore them and they will show off and grow well to get your attention
