My Latest Winter Project

December 30th 2011 12:46
Welcome back, today I would like to give you some info. about my latest project.
My wife and I just bought a vintage yamaha exciter snowmobile, kinda ugly but i'll show you how to fix that. It runs pretty good with a simple tune up and lube job, so first I took off the seat and my wife bought some white marine grade vinyl and went to work.
I took the hood off and removed all vents, windshield and headlight.
Okay so now or with any painting project you need to repair body damage, luckily this is fiberglass which you can purchase at walmart, careful when you mix the hardener with it to much and you better work quick because it will setup very fast.

When you have the body work done give it a light sand and wipe down, I usually use alcohol but thats up to you, next and this is very important you want to buy a decent spray primer. Most of my spray paint (enamel) I buy at Menards but I think Walmart carries them, as your probably thinking spray paint? Well yes , now your not going to be showing this at a show or nothing but with proper prep work you will be amazed at the finished product. The project I'm going to show you is of urban camo. or snow camo.

Okay you have done the body work if needed and wiped it down, when you spray the primer put the first coat on light then with it a little tacky spray a nice second coat on.
You can spray whatever you want till it has an even coverage, then with that dry spray your base coat on for this project it will be white if you were doing regular camo. start off with a base of brown then olive then tan, but back to our project at hand . Spray on your white base , I'm sorry forgot to send you to the craft store/hobby store for some fake foilage, whatever kind floats your boat, I usually stick with the big leafy types and some narrow stuff and a fern, fern really brings it out. On occasion if you have some netting in strips that looks pretty cool too. Alright back to it , after your white take the gray paint and hold your foilage over the project and spray over i,t the over spray is what will help with design but dont go to heavy.
Work your way through all of your foilage then let it set up a little bit and switch to black and thats it.

To finish the project I will usually hit it with a clear coat, but light coats you dont want sags, let that setup and presto urban camo. I hope you enjoyed this post as always if you have any questions about anything get hold of me. I had fun and I hope you will send some feed back , keep coming back and i'll keep writing. Thanks again and i'll see ya soon!
