Music review: Shinedown insists on respecting others and showing energy
These are your brothers and these are your sisters. Treat them with some fucking respect, Shinedown singer Brent Smith said when a few bad seeds tried to spoil the bunch.
July 5, 2006 was the first outdoor summer concert at the Cheverly Center in Youngstown. Other than a few people getting thrown out for bad behavior and some technical difficulties things were great. As we were herded in like cattle (Im use to that) security warned NO CROWD SURFING, NO FIGHTING. rules were broken and people were thrown out. Ids were checked and rechecked and you needed a wristband to buy alcohol. A security guard was checking Ids upfront during the concert just to make sure everyone drinking were legal.
Shinedown played a stellar show, but insisted we give them the energy needed to play. Thats only fair to get us at least partly as exhausted as they must be after performing. The band including Smith, guitarist Jasin Todd, bassist Brad Steward and drummer Barry Kerch really did not let up on the energy as long as we gave up some too. They had most everyone in the audience singing along, jumping up and down, holding hands and lighting up our lighters and/or cell phones to all our favorite Shine down hit: I DARE YOU, 45, SIMPLE MAN, SAVE ME and more.
Evans Blue was the second band to go on stage. By the sound of their set they should not be a one hit wonder for their song Cold (but Im still here) which seemed to be the only song most of the audience knew. Beg, stood out as another great song in the set to get us going and ready for Shinedown.
Rivers Edge opened the show at 7:25pm. They had more of an 80s rock feel that seemed a bit out of place with the crowd.
There were a few technical difficulties with mics. The worst was when the mic went out completely during the Shinedown performance. But still if you were not there you should have been. The music was better live!
