40 Years since the murder of Bian Zhongyun: Remember her to her ancestors.
October 18th 2006 23:08
40 years have passed since Bian Zhongyun, distinguished assistant principal, was taken out of her class room and beaten to death by her students at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. Her crime was as follows. During a fire drill she was asked by one of her students whether it was equally important to saving themselves for the students to rescue a portrait of Chairman Mao Zedong. She did not answer with sufficient enthusiasm.
Bian was the assistant principal of an exclusive school which had taught the daughters of Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqui and Deng Xiaoping. The daughter of Deng may have been on of the killers. After a severe beating by the students, her body was dumped in a cart and dragged outside a local hospital, outside of which, she died. She left a husband and four young children. Though her husband photographed her body, the authorities would do nothing for her.
The cultural revolution, begun and fermented by the hideous Mao Zedong about whose villainies we now know so much, became the breeze which they sowed and the “whirlwind” they reaped. The intellectual life of the nation perished with Bian. Scholars, musicians, professionals were dragged from their places of work behatted with dunce hats and dragged through the streets in a modern Auto da fe.
Bian died alone but will not be forgotten, nor will the lesson that a Revolution is Saturn that eats his children.
