The hidden cost of buying generic

I use generic products frequently to save money. I have learned that they are not always the better value, however. It is important to consider overall value when making everyday purchases.
Case in point, I recently switched from my favorite name brand scoopable cat litter to a lower priced generic. The result was an unhappy and even sick cat with diarrhea. Lesson learned.
So, how do you know if a product is a good or bad value for your dollar? Unfortunately, learning what works for you frequently takes trial and error. You win some (like my generic cereal which I think is even better than the name brand) and you lose some (like the kitty litter). Sometimes, however, you can learn from the wisdom and experiences of others by researching products with Consumer Reports, Good Housekeeping and other reputable online sources. You can also get opinions of people just like yourself by asking a question on Yahoo Answers or reading blogs like this one.
