The Oscars, India and the victory of Hope
February 25th 2009 06:15
Oscars this year had India written all over it. It actually felt like and Indian Film award ceremony with lots of Hollywood stars as guests. And why was that? Because of one movie made in collaboration with Indian Craftsmen about a guy from the slums becoming a millionaire. Many in India actually did not like this movie called Slumdog Millionaire. Because after all a country that it trying hard to shun off the image of a poverty stricken, hunger belt of the world, cannot possibly like any movie showing exactly that. But if you really look closely, it is not actually the story of the slum India. It is about a man who fights all odds, and even in the dire of circumstances triumphs because of his faith and hope of finding the lost love. It is actually not about India or the slum, it is a universal story of defeat and victory, struggle and hope, and love that beats all odds.
The Indians who won the Oscars were also people who live the same lives of eternal struggle, constant battle with a lot of odds to finally shine, and steal the limelight from the veterans of Hollywood. They were A R Rahman, Gulzar and Usul the Sound Engineer. These are men who have long been recognised in India for the creative geniuses and might not even want the added recognition from the Academy because they already know that they are good. But the award from the Academy isn’t for them, it is more to do with the people from US, UK, Europe or the rest of the world, who now know that it isn’t necessary to be part of Hollywood to be a super star. They now know that creativity, superlative music, intuitive lyrics, master soundtracks can come out from the so called third world nation. They now know that it is not really easy to overlook genuine talent all the time. They also now generously rejoice the amalgamation of nations through creativity, music and art that knows no boundaries.
Oscars this year did more to the world than to India. It brought hope back to the world struggling with recession. It showed hard work always finds its way to the top and the winner takes it all.
