Oscars this year had India written all over it. It actually felt like and Indian Film award ceremony with lots of Hollywood stars as guests. And why was that? Because of one movie made in collaboration with Indian Craftsmen about a guy from the slums becoming a millionaire. Many in India actually did not like this movie called Slumdog Millionaire. Because after all a country that it trying hard to shun off the image of a poverty stricken, hunger belt of the world, cannot possibly like any movie showing exactly that. But if you really look closely, it is not actually the story of the slum India. It is about a man who fights all odds, and even in the dire of circumstances triumphs because of his faith and hope of finding the lost love. It is actually not about India or the slum, it is a universal story of defeat and victory, struggle and hope, and love that beats all odds.

The Indians who won the Oscars were also people who live the same lives of eternal struggle, constant battle with a lot of odds to finally shine, and steal the limelight from the veterans of Hollywood. They were A R Rahman, Gulzar and Usul the Sound Engineer. These are men who have long been recognised in India for the creative geniuses and might not even want the added recognition from the Academy because they already know that they are good. But the award from the Academy isn’t for them, it is more to do with the people from US, UK, Europe or the rest of the world, who now know that it isn’t necessary to be part of Hollywood to be a super star. They now know that creativity, superlative music, intuitive lyrics, master soundtracks can come out from the so called third world nation. They now know that it is not really easy to overlook genuine talent all the time. They also now generously rejoice the amalgamation of nations through creativity, music and art that knows no boundaries.

Oscars this year did more to the world than to India. It brought hope back to the world struggling with recession. It showed hard work always finds its way to the top and the winner takes it all.

Chandni Chowk To China

January 27th 2009 06:18

Have you ever gone to see a movie that everyone said was the most boring picture made ever and actually enjoyed every bit of it? I experienced exactly that while watching Chandni Chowk to China or CC2C as it is being called. Ok, it may not be the best movie ever made but it is definitely not the worst. Akshay Kumar does act well and the story is not at all so bad that the picture is claimed as such a big disappointment.

The story is something like this. In a tiny little village of China there lives a legend that a certain war hero named Liou Shang is going to come again to save the villagers from their miseries and also kill their most dreaded enemy Moja. In search for their hero the villagers land in Delhi,Chandni Chowk area to be specific and take back Sidhu, the cook with them.

Now Sidhu is an orphan who finds everything wrong with his life and hopes everyday, every minute to change his destiny somehow. He has left his life in the mercy of all the lords he can think of and thus is constantly either visiting fortune tellers, or temples to find good luck.

The journey to China is what he thinks will change his destiny and make him a king. But what is in store for him in the distant, unkown land, can only be known when you see the movie.

All this while I am not talking about the heroine of the movie, Deepika Padukone, because she does not really have that important a role, although it is a double role! She is useful for the story but as such does not act much when compared to Akshay Kumar. Akshay Kumar is his natural best and quite adorable in all scenes. The best thing about the film is, which I hated most in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, is that the characters do not change just because they are in a different setting and culture. The people remain the same and it how they being the same person use their skills to tackle the problem is what is shown quite nicely in the film.

There are many things that could have been done better, like the director had such a good chance to show the real China, capture their culture, people, art, nature in celluloid, but the attempt has been very novice. The story is nice but not very gripping, there are parts where you think, how a person landed at one place and then suddenly was in another place.

If you go to see CC2C thinking you are watching a fairy tale kind of story that has good people and bad people and goodness prevails, I am sure you will quite enjoy it. Children will love the funny parts and the fights I am sure.

All in all not bad at all.

Do let me know what you think of the movie. Because I can guarantee you, just like I disagreed with others reviews, you might disagree with some of my points too. So feel free to leave comments, praise and criticism.

Ghajini

Ghajini
Director
A.R. Murugadoss
Actors
Aamir Khan,Asin,Jiah Khan, Pradeep Rawat
Music
A R Rahman

There seldom comes a film whose name is not about the hero or the heroine but the name of the villain. Ghajini, is exactly that. And yet, ghajini’s role in the movie is not as important as that of Sanjay Singhania, who has to find Ghajini at all costs and take revenge for killing his beloved. The twist in the tale, Sanjay is suffering from short term memory loss and he can remember things only for 15 minutes!

There you have it. A plot of a film that is already grossing Rs. 200 crores worldwide and may make much more in the coming weeks. And I think all the credit must go to Aamir Khan. Not only is he looking his killer best with the eight packs body, he has acted superbly yet again in this romantic action film. Credit must also go to the South Indian director A.R. Murugadoss who is also the writer of the film. His magic lies in the way he unravels the complete story, with its flashbacks, part by part. There is no urgency to finish of the romantic story that leads to the murder of the heroine and then the complete make over of the hero who turns a killer. Another person who definitely deserves applause is Asin , the new bollywood star in the making. You really realise when you watch the movie, as to why this southern actress is being hailed by all the biggies of Indian film industry. She actually lives her role in the movie, be it the romantic scenes, portrayal of the mischievous nature, or the pinnacle moment – the scene when she is murdered. She is natural, charming, beautiful and a good actress. Lets hope she keeps up the good work.

If you have watched Tare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan’s last box office hit, you will be utterly surprised with the completely different look and character he is playing in this film. He is dark, angry, dangerous and yet you feel sorry for his plight. The best scene are when his fifteen minutes of memory are over and he suddenly stops doing whatever he is doing and stares blankly into space. I think there are very few in bollywood be it the kings or the singhs who could have portrayed the pain, romance and the anguish of this character so well as Aamir Khan has.

Do watch the movie, but avoid taking kids as the action seens may be a little harsh on them. Oh yes, there is another heroine called Jiah Khan who is also seen. But her role is so normal that it seems anybody could have done it.

I am now keen on watching the original tamil film Ghajin just to see how the southern stars have faired. Are they as good as Aamir Khan? Let me watch it first and tell you. Or perhaps someone out there has already seen the southern flick, then do tell me is it as superb as the hindi Ghajni?
