More on Invercargill

When moving with the Holy Spirit it is always a case of what is God up to now. Back in a town, I have always had a soft spot for; the reason God brought us here soon came to the fore. Firstly, He had my attention when Hine got a job with a start the next day.

A caterer hired me soon after and the money started to roll in. We found a little flat with an open plan kitchen and nice garden to go with it. Then our son-in-law and daughter started having problems. Eventually the authorities stepped in and took the children away to a safe house, not good.

It was nearly three months before we saw them again. Our four grandchildren were all living in different houses. That meeting was hard on all of us. Because of our concerns and love for children, we stepped in and asked if we could look after them until their mother, and father sorted himself out.

The welfare said this was possible but our flat was too small. Renting has its advantages meaning it is easier to up and move. This is something we happen to know about. Because we were going to get custody of the grandchildren, my wife had a smile that went from one ear to the other.

After much prayer, we settled on a four-bedroom house and duly moved in. The two boys came first with visits by the girls in the weekends. I encouraged my wife to keep working as she made good money whilst I am only a humble dishwasher and whatever else needs doing around an industrial kitchen. I gave up my job and looked after the children full time. With the allowances they paid, it worked out to be more than what I earned with my kitchen job. Seek first the kingdom of God again.

Then I got a phone call from the welfare saying the girl’s caregiver was going on holiday; would we like to have them for two weeks.

“Yes,” I replied, “but you must realise there will be a slight problem.”
“Oh.”
“You will not get them back.”

The welfare officer laughed and said see how I felt in two weeks time. When the time was up Hine and I decided we could cope. They all stayed with us for nearly a year before moving back home.
