Mood Swings during Pregnancy

April 4th 2009 07:53
Pregnancy, especially for the first time, can be an intimidating and frightening experience for a woman. Pregnant women are prone to mood swings because of the numerous changes occurring within their body. If they think about the other changes that would happen when they finally give birth, this could result to another bout of mood swing. Help your loved one get over their mood swings and enjoy a beautiful pregnancy with the tips below.

No More Stress
Avoid anything that could cause your pregnant loved one to feel stressed. Have her leave work as early as possible but only if she’s amenable to it. Never force her to do anything but of course, you need to convince her as well that certain activities will be off-limits to her due to her condition.

Pregnant women can be exceptionally touchy when it comes to the things that they were once able to do in the past but are now unable to. They know what’s good for them, but they’re having a hard time accept it. In these instances, you can only show your love and support.

Eliminate stress and you eliminate one significant cause for mood swings during pregnancy.

No More Fatigue
Pregnant women tire more easily so it’s important that you advise them to stay away from any activity which could exhaust them. Exhaustion weakens the body and consequently, the unborn baby would feel exhausted, too. Remember: the health of an unborn child relies on the health of the pregnant mother.

Mood swings are a natural result of fatigue. You need only, however, remind them of their child’s health and they are sure to desist from whatever they’re doing.

Get Quality Sleep
Sleep is good not only for the body but for the mind as well. When you’re sleeping, your body recharges and at the same time, your mind becomes free from the numerous worries it’s been plagued with. When your pregnant loved one gets enough sleep, she’ll be able to face the next day with greater energy and complacency.

Have Fun
One reason why many women are unhappy during their pregnancies is because of the excessive number of restrictions placed on them. Pregnancy doesn’t make a woman chronically sick. She has an unborn child in her body, yes, but this doesn’t mean she’s dying. The opposite of it, actually, considering that she’s about to give new life to her baby.

Mood swings during pregnancy could simply be a result of boredom. You can, however, easily prevent this from happening just by treating your pregnant loved one to an occasional night out. If the time comes that she’s unable to leave the home frequently then have fun indoors. Schedule in-home movie sessions, reading groups, and invite friends to share an occasional meal.

Communicate Constantly
Constant communication between you and your pregnant partner or loved one is imperative. Even if talking won’t solve your biggest problems, unburdening her worries is relaxing in itself. With constant communication, you’ll also be better able to assure her of your love and affection.

Diet and Exercise
TLC from you will keep her happy, but it won’t keep her body healthy. For that to happen, you need to ensure that your pregnant loved one eats right and has adequate exercise. Consult professionals to know the best diet and exercise regime for pregnant women.

It's normal for people to go through different emotions throughout the day. However, for people who suffer from conditions that cause mood swings, it can be problematic. It not only upsets their normal day-to-day functions, it also affects their social and personal relationships. Fortunately, mood swings can be managed and if you experience them frequently, you do have ways of dealing with them. Here's how:

Determine the cause of your mood swings.
Mood swings can be a symptom of another condition. To deal with it properly, make sure you know exactly what causes it. If its depression, for example, you might want to seek professional help. If it's caused by food or lifestyle, you will have to make some conscious changes in order to manage your mood properly.

Seek professional help.
If your mood swings are frequent and already affect your life and that of your family terribly, it would be a good idea to go and see your doctor. He could give you a proper diagnosis, find the true cause of your mood swings and prescribe the correct treatment. This could include therapy or medication or a combination of both.

Get sufficient information.
You're less likely to allow your mood swings to go out of control if you understand how and why it happens. If you have been diagnosed with a condition that leads to mood swings, find out what you can about it. You're more likely to know how to handle your condition if you understand what causes it than if it remains a mystery to you.

Consider activities that help you feel focused.
If your mood swings are caused by emotional or mental issues, consider spending time on activities that help relax and keep you focused. A favorite pastime or hobby could help you calm down. People who suffer from conditions such as mood swings and depression are frequently encouraged to focus their energies on sports and creative pursuits. These activities not only keep your mind busy, it also helps you take control of how you react to certain situations.

Talk to your family and friends.
If your mood swings occur more often and you're undergoing therapy or medications, you will need all the support you can get. Discuss your condition with your family and friends. Other than you, they are the ones who are likely to be affected by your condition.

When you're dealing with mood swings, there will be certain changes in your behavior and your life. Don't let this affect your personal relationships. Let your family and friends know what you're going through. If they understand what it is that causes you to behave in a certain manner, they will be less likely to be offended or confused. They could also offer invaluable emotional support, something you will find important while you're trying to recover.

Follow the doctor's prescription.
There really is no reason for you to suffer unnecessarily from mood swings. That is why it's important that you follow the course of therapy or medication prescribed to you. If you are told to avoid certain activities or food, for example, you will have to follow it carefully.

Certain small sacrifices will have to be made but you'll be glad to know that most of the time, these are temporary. If you're dealing with mood swings, be ready for its challenges. Some days it can be tough and on some days it can be nearly impossible but it is still manageable.

Moods swings are not a disease or condition in and of themselves. They are actually a symptom of a condition. Unless the condition was caused by an underlying disease, mood swings can often be attributed to a vitamin and mineral deficiency. To correct this, supplements are often required, on top of a prescribed diet. Probably the best supplements to use for mood swings are multivitamins, particularly those that contains the following:

Vitamin B complex
Most people lack sufficient B vitamins in their diets. These are important for the metabolism of carbohydrates and the regulation of the adrenal glands. They are also very essential nutrients that help relieve symptoms associated with mood swings, specifically those caused by withdrawal from caffeine and sugar. Furthermore, the B-complex family is excellent for helping stressed-out nerves, something that many people with mood swings suffer from.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system. It's a very useful supplement and is best for people who suffer from mood swings. It enhances the adrenal functions and stimulates the metabolism of the liver.

Vitamins A and E
These two vitamins are fat-soluble, which means they will be stored in the body, particularly the liver. They are both antioxidants, capable of enhancing the body's ability to heal itself. Both vitamins are important for helping increase the body's immunity against bacterial invasion.

Chromium
Chromium is one of the essential minerals that many people have a deficiency of. It helps stabilize the levels of sugar in the blood, very useful if someone has mood swings. The amount usually found in multivitamins is usually enough to correct any deficiencies present.

Fiber
Fiber is a very important component of any diet. It comes in the form of roughage such as bran and wheat. It is also found in some fruits and vegetables. Other than the fact that fiber regulates the bowel movement, it also helps control the rate of sugars that enter the bloodstream. This helps avoid the danger of hyperglycemia, which is characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood, a condition that often leads to weakness and mood swings.

Fiber also has many advantageous functions in the body, such as:

- preventing reabsorption of cholesterol
- lowering the levels of blood fat
- detoxifying the colon
- preventing the absorption of fungal and bacterial matter into the bloodstream
- preventing the absorption of toxins

Using multivitamins
Other than fiber, a good multivitamin is one of the best supplements for mood swings. Multivitamins contain a combination of the most important nutrients needed by the human body in the correct dosage. However, just because the label says 'multivitamins' does not automatically mean it is complete. Some multivitamins contain only nutrients that are commonly missed, such as the B vitamins, calcium, zinc and magnesium while others may focus more on providing antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C and E.

When taking multivitamins, try to determine your nutritional supplement needs first. Check your diet to identify which vitamins and minerals you lack. It would also help if you consider symptoms (mood swings is a sign that you lack certain vitamins) and then determine which nutritional supplements are best for managing it.

Just remember, though, that these are supplements and are meant to correct deficiencies. Foods are still the best sources of vitamins and minerals. Many cases of mood swings are caused by deficiencies and can be easily corrected by the proper diet.
