Monster

The television version of this movie has been in the lineup of Oxygen or The Lifetime Movie Network lately, and I managed to catch the entire thing, plus the true life documentary of who the movie was on afteward. Charlize Theron won an Oscar for her portrayal as the the nation's only known female seriel killer, and rightfully so. She looked awful, she behaved like a, well, monster and she convinced the hell out of viewers that nowhere in there is pretty little Charlize. Nonetheless, watching the documentary made me realize that the real Aileen Weurnos (and I'm pretty sure I'm spelling that wrong, and I'm not about to Google it since I'm at work) was way worse than the sympathy inducing character Charlize portrayed. While I thought the things Weurnos was sujected to her entire life were despicable, she still managed to make me feel not an ounce of sympathy for her. Such was not the case with Theron, and a tiny part of me was rooting for her in the movie, mostly based on how she treated her girlfriend, Christina Ricci. This is a movie that you need to be in the mood for and that you need to watch either alone or with particular company. I'd imagine the non-TV version would have even more language than the TV version and the subject matter is not to be taken lightly. Add this one to the pile with Schindler's List and The Passion of the Christ as movies you probably should see but may not want to see and won't feel really great after viewing but will walk away knowing that you are a more knowledgable person, at least movie-wise for having seen.
