Misconception or Obsession?
August 3rd 2008 01:34
It's time today for rant number three! I would like to say a few things before I jump in, one being the mature content warning (Orble does a good job of making sure you see it only if you want to if it's marked as mature, but there are some people who can't see the forest because of the tress.) This will get a bit vulgar and may touch on a few sexual things (I would like to add I really don't do that much pre-planning, maybe just a subject and a tone and not content, that's saved for when I start writing.) I'd also like to apologize for lack of blogging, I was caught up in a few other things, and was kinda stumped for something to rant about (Scary really, I always got something to rant about....)
Now before we jump in I would like to state that I put this in as gaming content, that will indeed be the main theme of today's rant, but it will touch down in other areas as well. (It'll all tie in, I promise.)
Now that we have all the run-on sentences out of the way, we can get started.
I am indeed a gamer, a gamer that games quite heavily at times. Me being a PC geek I am a PC gamer, now the thing that is great about PC gaming is how much easier it is to mod the games. For those standing there with your thumb in your ass: I mean it's easier to add modifications to the game. Thus we have modding. Several games that I play are well known to be heavily modded, as they are easy to mod and there is much interest in the community to mod said game.
Now I think it is wonderful that we are able to modify games and kind of do our own thing. We even gather into communities and share this content, sometimes you can find some damn well creative gems in there, as well as useful things like tweaks and fixes.
Let me take just a second to say this: I know what I am about to say will make me stick out like a fucked up thumb. It will make me look like an outsider, but there's a multilayer reason for today's rant, I'll explain it all in the end.
Now, as much as it pains me to say this, there are some modders that really piss me off. Two types actually, though you could say that they kind of overlap one another.
Let's jump on the one that really pisses me off. The type of modder that thinks they can do everything (or only a certain thing) six billion times better than the makers of the game can. They're really cocky and think they're all bad ass and better than everyone else. First of fucking all, if they're so much fucking better, why in the hell are they not working for a game company and pumping out all this 'bad ass' material? If they think they're so fucking perfect why aren't they doing the job? The truth is that they aren't so good. They think they're so kick ass just because they produced some huge ass project. (Although doing that solo is admirable, but the cockiness kills it). They bitch that everything looks like shit, or isn't realistic enough or what the hell ever, then go and release something that looks (In my opinion) just as shitty. It looks like plastic, fake. It dosen't fit in with the world around it and sticks out like a broken finger. Like a chick that wears too much makeup and has obvious implants. There are of course people that create replacements that are rather nice, and they are not cocky or air headed. Sometimes they may bitch a bit, but hell, I can do with that. These people with the 'I can do it fifty thousand times better' attitude is what really pisses me off.
Retracing back a bit to beauty, and going into more details there. (and going outside the box). One thing I can't grasp is the fact that people try to make something prettier, and overshoot it like crazy. They try to create something, and make it overly pretty, so pretty it looks shitty. (Still talking about modding here folks.) It often makes me wonder whether it's an obsession, or a misconception. Are these people so obsessed with making something 'beautiful' and 'realistic' that they overdo it? Do they not realize that the stuff they're creating is not realistic at all? Perhaps it's just me, maybe I have the misconception problem. I don't know to be honest, but it still is annoying, and the fact that it's everywhere is even more annoying. From game mods to some of these models you see and actors/actresses too. They all just look..fake..like they're not even real, like they're an object. Makes me wonder why someone would do that to themselves, or make something like that. Makes me wonder if they're just misconceiving things or if it's an obsession created by the fat-cat media.
To wrap things up here, I must say that I am not bashing people's work or creativity. I'm bashing something deeper, I'm bashing the mystery as to why these things or done, bashing the fact that it could be a misconception or an obsession. (And bashing the cocky assholes, I'm bashing the hell out of them.)
I can understand the want for good looking things and whatnot, but there is a line, and I think we crossed it long ago. It's sad really. I prefer a more natural beauty, and I think it is fine if we step in and modify things sometimes, but there is a damn limit. Sometimes I wonder if we've forgotten that variety is indeed the spice of life. Not every man and woman needs to be sexy, not ever child needs to be cute. Surely not everything needs to be fucking obsessively overdone. Would you want to eat food that looks fake? Live in a house that looks like it's fake? Make love to a girl/guy that looks like they're 90% silicone? (Lonely guys with sex dolls need not answer that last rhetorical question.)
My bottom line is: If you're trying to improve something, or contribute to something, great. Just don't overdo it and don't obsess over it so much that it gets out of hand. (And yes, I understand there are acceptations and that we all make mistakes, this is for people who don't learn.)
