Mini Orble for Film

March 6th 2008 06:00
Now we have reached a decent size I'd like to start developing "Mini Orbles" around certain topics or channels. This has a number of advantages:

1) If we get lots of traffic around a certain niche we can charge more (much more, about 4x) for advertising because we can approach specific advertisers. This will hopefully lift what Orble bloggers earn above AdSense rates which has always been a long term aim. Orble bloggers are already better off because they get more readers, this will be another good reason to blog here.

We already have quite a lot of film traffic so hopefully it won't take too much more to make this happen.

2) The bloggers within a given Mini Orble community will have more in common so their should be more commenting and interaction which makes the blogging more interesting.

3) The links between the blogs within a mini-category will be worth more because they are coming from domains on the same topic. This should mean more Search Engine traffic for participating blogs.

4) Traffic sharing will increase as a reader on one blog will be much more likely to click on a link to read a post on a blog covering the same topic.

All in all it's one big ball of blogging goodness!

The first Mini Orble I've set up is for film, as we have so many film bloggers already. I've created film.orble.com which is actually just an Orble channel which has been placed on it's own sub-domain.

If you have a look at moviecritic.com.au you will also see that in the Orble menu is listed the most popular film posts and film blogs above the general Orble blogs. These are the high-value links and traffic sharing mentioned above. These links will appear for all film blogs (if I've missed one let me know).

Traffic stat emails for blogs within a Mini Orble will also contain a ranking for that blog within that channel and list the top 100 blogs within that category.

The todo list includes a Daily Orble subscription for film and a couple of other goodies.

Part of the creation of each Mini Orble will come along with a push to recruit bloggers for that channel. In this spirit I've come up with a few film related domain names for new film bloggers to take on:

moviestripe.com
moviedime.com
filmdash.com
filmmage.com
filmdime.com
filmbanana.com
cinemavoyage.com
filmsi.com
filmsfound.com
cinemathree.com
cinemaherald.com
cinemaenthusiast.com
cinemadoor.com
cinemadime.com
cinemarat.com
cinemabanana.com
cinemaxyz.com
cinemanut.com

There are a couple of really good domains in there so if any existing bloggers would like to take one on (or know someone who may) leave a comment or send me a PM.

Regards,
Jon.

Love the increased money theme, and it's a good one, but I don't think this really fits me.

Return comments for me and everyone else would be appreciated.

so will they exist in subdomains? like film.orble.com?

I think this is a good idea, I'll sign up if it's going to be about cinema, games or tech.

Ahmed -- all the channels will be based around subdomains like film.orble.com, most likely tech.orble.com and games.orble.com, or gaming.orble.com. If you are interested in a cinema blog let me know which domain you would like and I'll set you up.

TechyBytes.com will automatically be part of the tech channel when it's set up, and videogamerkids.com will be part of games channel. That applies to all the existing blogs, they will be made part of new channels as they are set up if it's appropriate.

Jarrah -- let me know if you are interested (and which domain you like) and I'll set you up.

Brenton -- Hopefully it won't take too long to get onto the next channel, but it would be good to get film.orble.com going properly before moving onto the next one.

This is good.

I am in the most popular posts, but not listed under 'film blogs'. Also don't have the film only links on my page, to make it easy for people to get to other film sites from my blog.

great stuff - we definitely have enough film bloggers to make this work. For more of a community feel, I strongly urge film bloggers to read other film posts and comment. What goes around comes around!

Hey there,

I've just launched a film blog over at blogger about a week ago and am an active film journo. Saw your ad go up on Seek just now and am curious to know more...

I ask this with all sincerity and curiosity, why should I come over to Orble to do my blogging?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

There are a couple of reasons whys it's better to blog on Orble which are all outlined on the about page.

The main reason is that you will get more readers, due to the fact that all the blogs share links (more search engine traffic) and readers.

You can see how much traffic you can expect from an Orble blog over time here.

Orble does take a 50% commission of the advertising, but we are confident that in the majority of cases you will get much more than double the amount of traffic you would get with a blog elsewhere.

The other main reason is that it's more interesting blogging on Orble. People actually read what you write and leave comments.

You also have access to Orble support who can provide advice on blogging as well as some technical support if required.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I've been contemplating on getting a movie themed blog because this is what I studied in college!

Just not sure if my current blogs can prove I can handle another one.

Jon let me know if you'll let me take over one of these domains

Congratulations on the 100,000 readers by the way!

Hi Jon,

I like this idea and I also like filmsfound.com or better still cinemaherald.com (to make a matching pair) if I can have either, to talk about films.

Cheers for the opportunity.

I would love to be a part of this if someone could work out adsense for me... one of the reasons I stopped writing a lot of stuff for orble was because I couldn't get my head around adsense and all that stuff.

If anyone can help me - email me at Skankuvius1@hotmail.com

What's Your Story -- writing.orble.com is definitely on the list.

Hazel -- I'm happy for you to take on a film blog. Let me know which domain you would like.

Morgan -- Movietrain.net is free and would probably be the best to take on as it's an older domain. I'll let you know when it's ready to go for you. Also let me know if you would like a domain for your artist blog. A quick note about your movie blog -- watch your paragraphs (use them to break up the text) and your punctuation. Readers do appreciate good textual layout.

Ahmed -- I'll set up cinemathree.com for you. I'll let you know when it's up and running.

Lilla -- CinemaHerald.com it is. I'll be in touch as soon as it's working.

Luke -- I've sent you an email.

Hi Jon,

I'm "new", just launched out today in fact, so still getting my head around everything. This seems like a really good idea. I'd like to have a crack at cinemanut.com if it's still going, because it rolls off the tongue in a pleasing way, and when it comes down to it, that's what I am. Keen to get stuck into it..
Best,
Jonathan.

Jonathan -- cinemanut.com is gone unfortunately, though I'm happy to give you a domain.

The available list is now:

cinemathree.com
cinemaherald.com
cinemaenthusiast.com
cinemadime.com
cinemaxyz.com
filmdash.com
filmmage.com
filmdime.com

Or you can use telivo.com to find a free domain name.

A few rules when searching for a domain:

* Try to find a name with a .com ending.
* It should contain no more than 2 words.
* It should be no longer than 10 letters, the shorter the better.
* It should contain an appropriate keyword for your blog's topic. For instance cinemadoor.com for a film blog.
* Don't use dashes (-)

Jon.
