Miley Cyrus takes vow of celibacy to avoid an Achy Breaky Heart

June 30th 2009 08:01
Sixteen year old Miley Cyrus has taken a vow of celibacy stating "I want to keep my virginity until I marry. I was brought up in a Christian family."

Miley who has recently spilt with underwear model Justin Gaston, 20, whom she had been dating for several is now rumoured to be rekindling her romance with Jonas Brothers star Nick Jonas, 16. Nick, along with his brothers are well known for having pledged to abstain from pre-marital sex.

One does have to consider whether or not Miley's vow of celibacy comes from her 'strong' Christian beliefs, or if she is merely trying to repair her damaged Family-Friendly image - Miley sparked public outrage late last year when she posed semi-naked for America's Vanity Fair magazine.

I'm willing to give her the benefit of a doubt and ABSTAIN from making any judgements here and now. We will just have to wait and see what the future holds for the young starlet.

The question that begs is whether Miley, or the Jonas brothers go to those infamous fellatio parties, where oral sex is not considered losing one's virtue.

We will just have to wait and see what becomes of these tween idols, Raoul Duke. Will they fall from grace, or grow into respectful members of society.

i quite liked her Vanity Fair portrait, i thought it was tastefully done and the image itself is more classically artistic than gratuitously sexual

if she is serious about her celibacy then dating a Jonas brother is probably a great idea, they have built a career on remaining celibate

however, when all is said and done i dont really see why she needs to make declarations about her sex life in order to be successful, it should be about how she performs as an entertainer and a singer

Personally I think a lot of these stars are just to young - let them enjoy being kids Morgan. As for the vanity fair images, she was 15 at the time I believe and though I am sure many would argue the artistic merit, I don't see it.

We agree in part here - though I don't see why someone this young needs to be thinking about sex at all.

Kids, famous or not, think they have to get involved in sex at an early age for some reason, Aimee. When I was in my teens, some of us thought it was cool to be celibate (I was among them). Those who didn't got to discover the joys of parenthood a little sooner than they expected. (pun intended).

So many young celebrities think nothing of behaving badly, with sex and drugs. It generally winds up in disaster (like Brittny Spears for example). They make terrible role models. I hope Miley Cyrus keeps her vow!

So do I S.L. it would be nice to see her succeed. Call me jaded though, I have just watched so many stars -like Brittny as you mentioned- turn into total train wrecks.

I never made a vow of celibacy as such, but I did wait until I was engaged - obviously it was a laps in judgement as I am single nowadays.

my main question is why did you cut the other person out of your blog pic was he unworthy of you is he an ex or are you just trying to maintain some semblance of dignity and privacy if any of my three girlfriends or any of my ex wives cut me out of a pic and I saw that pic on the net id contact my lawyer and not just because he supplies me with coke and speed and e's
its always good to have a healthy relationshp with your legal representative for the record we have only ever snorted twice in public all those rumours about us in the toilets are unfounded

I'm not sure if this is your intention BobB, but your comments seem to be quite rude. If you must know the person cut out is my ex-finance.

Please come back only if you plan on being hospitable.

i worked as a waiter for a long time. may i offer you a beverage of your own choosing.
maybe we could have an amicable sitdown together and discuss how my intentions are far more honourable than you could ever imagine and that my wit has often been mistaken for rudeness, whereas if you were to go back to the first comment I made to you you would see that is was a compliment and not disparaging in any way whatsoever ive met a lot of control freaks in my time and fair enough its your blog and you have every right to make me behave but if i behaved completely where would we be in boresville
anyway whats your poison you look like the sort of lovely woman who would drink Jim Beam and Coke out of an Ugg Boot while sleeping upside down in a Coles shopping trolley you are definitely my type of woman one thing I would ask you if we hook up - which seems likely now due to my suaveness - is, do you have oven gloves because im not cleaning your oven without toxic protection

I think that portrait is lovely. A young girl, with a young girl's beauty, on the verge of adult life. Semi-naked? She is only showing her back and arm. Are you a moslem?

No Teresa I am not.

For the record, Miley has herself condemned the images - but we are all entitled to our opinions. What is a disgraceful exploit to one may be Art to another.

I completely agree - we are all entitled to our opinions. But when someone's opinion is opposite to mine, I always want to find out what they really think.
So can you tell me what it is exactly that you find offensive about the photo? And what does it have to do with her vows to remain celibate?

To me, the photo seems to be to staged. They have posed Miley in what is arguably a sexually suggestive manner. The make-up is also overdone in my opinion.

If the purpose was to photograph Miley, and demonstrate that she is growing up I believe there are better ways to show this. There is more to adulthood than being sexually objectified by men.

The picture just isn't an innocent child candidly snapped - it is a well orchestrated and deliberate act in which the main purpose seems to be shock value.

I've always loved that photo. It was taken by Annie Leibovitz - arguably one of the best photographers in the celebrity world - and I think it shows Miley's raw beauty and innocence to perfection. Also she's actually wearing very little makeup; her eyes aren't even lined, and apparently Miley's grandmother was at the shoot and the whole family approved the pictures.

Since when did backs become sexual? So sad that it's been misinterpreted like this, but then, everyone's entitled to their opinion. One person's art is another person's pornography.

As for her vow of celibacy, it's just the latest trend to pop up among the late Gen Y of the entertainment world, and she's probably just hoping to get people off her back (haha!) for a couple more years. Really, it's nobody's business but her own..... it seems silly that we're even discussing it.

I disagree Journywoman. The deep shade of lipstick, the manner in which her hair is styled, and she is obviously wearing mascara.

Doesn't every part of the human body have the potential to be perceived in a sexual fashion... Geisha's used to leave a small patch of skin exposed on their wrists and the back of their necks - it was considered quite erotic.

Thank you for your comments though, and sharing your point of view.

Sexual? Am I missing a point here?

It's an interesting image, sending an ambiguous message to the view. I find we read messages how we want them to be.

To me, she looks like a teenager, saying, 'OK how about this look? Is that OK?'

If anything, I find the image to be of one who is still being a child, not a sexual being.

Morgan, any thoughts? Journeywoman?

MNG I think the reason was so we could talk about it and write about it. Isn't that the reason for everything that happens?

There may have been some money making issues there too.

I suppose I am putting the Vanity Fair shoot into a context that compares it with the other images of Miley Cyrus that have surfaced. Images that she has taken of her self, wearing just undies and a bra - images of her in a deliberately smutty pose.

It is a pretty picture, but I think for her age it has a little too much of that "heroin chic" for my taste. I don't read the picture as her being sexual...rather I think she looks a bit strung out.

Annie Leibovitz is an incredible photographer and took more grief for this photo than was deserved, but I don't care for it much...just given Ms. Cyrus' age.

As far as Miley preserving her purity....I recall a time when I had the same philosophy. We'll see if it works out better for her

Hi Aimee,
I agree with you. A baby in a provocative pose.

Perhaps her public statement about celibacy until marriage is to be a role model for her peers. Who knows.

I wish her the best,

Good post.

I'm glad someone agrees with me on this point Samantha - I was starting to get a little worried.

I'd just like to see her be a kid for a while. Carefree, doing kid stuff. She shouldn't have to bare the responsibilities of adulthood just yet.

I have to agree with Natalina that Miley does look a bit strung out. I knew there was something off about that picture! And maybe that she's so young, too. The picture is not overtly sexual, but it is subtly sensual. I wouldn't want my daughter in that pose, but I guess when you're famous, things are different. I hope for her sake that she keeps her vow. Sex is too much for someone so young and inexperienced about life.

Didn'y Britney do something similar many years ago?
I now exposed to sex cant get enough of it but as for kids, way too young.

I think we as adults have a lot to answer for, I Know that seductive imags of women ( and to a lesser extent men) have been around for years, the availabllity and some poeples parenting styles mean that kids are exposed the sexuality a lot earlier than before. Knowing about our bodies is ok but learning about sex, is it really needed so early? I stoped my My eight year old daughter seeing a sex ed film not because of the sex ed part but because the film went on to explain what a clitoris is and how it can make you feel good!!

She is in a wonderful place at the moment and I am not about to drag her in to our world. I can't however keep her protected from the rest of the world..

My daughter loves Hannah Montana so I guess that at least she has made that statement. Anyhow would you want Billy Ray on your case if you were a boyfriend?

Yeah, right!
Okay, let me re-phrase my question.
You criticise this photo as being sexually suggestive. You say that Miley Cyrus should be free to be a child and not be burdened with adult responsibilities. How does posing, discreetly draped, for a photo burden her with adult responsibilities. Can you explain?

The problem is, so often, with the minds of the viewers.
