Brief Political Tidbits of the Day....

February 9th 2010 07:27
The world never seizes to be amazing. There are events happening that warant our attention because some events truly work to be life changers. There are those, for instance, who still can't accept the fact that Barack Obama is President of the United States. For those who accept that fact, they seem to act like Children saying no to everything. The latest manifestation of it was a letter from the Republican House Leadership to the President telling the President that they would attend the proposed televised meeting on Healthcare if a number of pre-conditions were met. The key one is to start healthcare from scratch.

I have continued to write about how the Republicans seem to be either so out of touch with reality or simply do not care. People are dying. People can't afford to go to the Doctors. America is spending 17% of its' Gross Domestic Product on Healthcare with nothing to show for it except some real flashy technology. To add insult to injury, Anthem Blue Cross just announced that it is raising its' rates by 39%. I welcome the California Insurance Commisioner's decision to investigate this. What I do need to point out is that Pozner wants to be Governor of the State.

Congress, on the other hand, continues to make a fool of itself. One of the biggest fools, in my view, is Richard Shelby, the U.S. Senator From the State of Alabama. He has put a blanket hold of all nominees for Obama Adminstration posts. When I read that report, I wondered why. From what I understand, a number of the appointments are key appointments to the Department of Justice and Homeland Security. I also have seen reports that he wants to force the Adminstration to cancel the Boeing Tanker Contract and give it to Airbus that happens to have assembly plants in Alabama. As George W. Bush liked to say, "...this is just politics...". Although I respect his zealous representation of his State's interest, what he needs to understand is that the greater interests of the Country has to be brought into account. Mr. Shelby seems to forget that an Air Force Procurement Official and a Boeing Executive went to jail when the original fiasco was uncovered by Senator McCain.

As I thought about the political landscape, I became ever more distrubed by the arguments made by Steve Clemons in the Huffington Post. Although I enjoy his writings, I think his comments about the failure of the Obama Presidency and blaming it on the "Chicago Four" seems to be misplaced and misguided in a major way. Both the left and the right seem to have it in for the President. As I wrote in KP's sister site, outsider views, Sarah Palin and the Tea Party crowd really had a blast!! I have continued to underscore the fact that the President has his work caught out for him. He can't afford to back down on Healthcare. He has to push ahead with the wars and get them done while dealing with preventive measures to avoid a double-dip recession. On a side note, I was saddened by the death of John Murtha. He was one of the courageous few that actually gave voice to those of us who dared to speak out against the Iraq war. He was right and courageous.

I do wonder whether President Obama have what it takes? I believe he does. But, November 5, 2010 will be the next key milestone for the President and the Adminstration.

The Arrest of General Fonseka

February 9th 2010 07:01
General Sarath Fonseka has been arrested:

There has been enough said about it throughout the International Media and I won't go into it here. Not withstanding how he was arrested and the fabricated charges, what I find disturbing is how paranoid the President of Sri Lanka has become. The Tigers were a bunch of thugs and terrorists and their leader met his maker because of what he put the country through. But, the President of Sri Lanka should have used this victory to help build a new Sri Lanka. He should have worked to bring the nation together and overcome this reputation of corruption and nepotism that seems to have become the order of the day. Yet, he has decided not to do that and just focus on power.

I am sure that General Fonseka understood the risks What is it about power that insures that people get to be ever more drunk?

Can "On the Beach" Be Possible?

February 9th 2010 06:39
Iran's recent moves to enrich uranium is now again in the news. Although I understand the concerns by the United States and the International Community, some of the hype is frankly mis guided and at times, provocative.

The current gang running Iran is not to be trusted. I eagerly await Feburary 11 to asess what the Green Movement is going to do. But, what I worry about is the increased military posturing and the rhetoric that may present challenges yet unimaginable. It is interesting how the two nations on the forefront of actions against Iran are the United States and Israel. It was the United States who is the only country in the world to have detonated a Bomb. Israel is the only country in the Middle East who actually possess nuclear weapons. Yet, they somehow want to prevent others from acquiring the technology. What they fail to undestand is that Iran has acquired the technology and they have to somehow figure out how to live with it.

I have written about the so-called 123 provision and how the United States is supporting the United Arab Emirates' efforts in acquiring the technology. The genie is out of the bottle. The challenge is how to control it to avoid Armageddon. This continues to bother me a great deal especially when I caught a glimpse of the flim "On the Beach". It is the story of life on Earth after a nuclear war. It turned out that Australia was the only "safe place" to be for a while until the Radiation arrived. The chiling final scenes send shivers down my spine:

Many in "main street" don't really wish to think about it. But the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the world to the brink as the historical accounts proved beyond a shadow of a doubt. With all that is going on now, it is not out of the realm of realism.

I am convinced that the present political leadership understands the profound implications of making the wrong move. When we have a planet that has to deal with Food and Water Security, it seems to me that we ought to move away from this fascination with War and Weapons. It will be quite amazing to really think about how the world can really be transformed when the amount spent on weapons can be redirected to spend on schools, food security and transform technology as we know it. Is it too unrealistic a vision to have? I wonder.

Sarah Palin spoke at the Tea Party Convention. I found it to be entertaining, but frankly scary:

There have been bombings in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The bombings occured during a major religious ceremony. The idiocy of it all boggles the mind!!!

In Iraq, pilgrims were attacked at the Holy City of Karbala. Bombings caused deaths in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. Public funerals are being planned right now. 31 people lost their lives. They were mostly women and children. After the first attack, a second attack occured at the hospital that the victims were taken too. Even worst, I am monitoring reports that a third bomb was defused by the Pakistani Authorities

This week saw me release a write up here in KP about the California US Senate election. My view was that for the State Democratic Party to set its' sights on Carly Fiorina was wrong and they should really tell the State why Barbara Boxer is the one to continue on the fight on behalf of California. What I also believe is that left to their own vices, the Republicans will tear themselves apart. This is the reason why:

California's Wake-Up Call

February 5th 2010 10:11
California, the largest US State and the 8th largest economy in the world, is in the midst of another election season. As I write this, I am profoundly concerned about the State. I have written about it extensively in SP's sister site, outsider views. When I read about Justice Kennedy's admonition at a Pepperdine Law School Forum, I nearly fell off my chair.

Justice Kennedy wrote the infamous Citizens United Decision which I also blased in a writeup in Outsider Views. What Justice Kennedy and the majority did was to usher in Government of the Corporation, by the Corporation, For the Corporation. I regard it as having institutionalized what Chris Hayes of the Nation recently called Corportaism in a major way. His comments, though, about the State of the Prison System was telling. I think he at least told the State to wake up and realize what was happening

Thank you all for a passionate discussion of the issues. Not withstanding the historical context of the discussion itself, let me just share some recent news that underscores the depth of the schism within Israel itself (source: Israel's Peace Now Movement):

Settlers Pack Up Protest Tent – Peace Now "Shows Lack of Public Support"
Today, the settler council packed up its protest tent, which they had pitched outside the Prime Minister's Office two weeks ago, and left the area.
Yariv Oppenheimer, Peace Now General Director: "The lack of public interest and support in the their protest against the Settlement Freeze clearly shows that their battle for public opinion was a failure and the majority of Israelis support the freeze and a return to negotiations".

Peace Now Objects to Opening of Israeli Only Road in West Bank
On January 4, 2009, the Higher Planning Council subcommittee will be considering the official objections by Peace Now and the residents of Beit Hanina over the planned route of Highway 20, designed to connect the Pisgat Ze'ev neighborhood and Route 443 through the private lands of the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina. Route 20 is planned as a road for Israelis only, to connect Jerusalem and 443, making the paving of the road illegal.

We have to also remember to keep an atmosphere of mutual respect. For us to be able to have the "grass root" crediblity to take on the HuffPosts, the Daily beats, the Daily Call (that came out today) so that they understand that they don't speak for us.....

Thanks again everyone.....and "see" you all later on tonight on the Web.

The problem is that Al Qaeda is not in Afghanistan anymore. All the key leaders are in Pakistan. This also includes the key leader of the Taliban, Mullah Omar who is in Quetta, Pakistan.

his discourse is exciting, enlightening and educational. Thank you for all the insights.

I don't believe that Israel must disarm. What I am suggesting is that Israel can be bold. Rabin was bold and had the courage to shake Arafat's hand. I had hoped that Netanyahu would do the same...but that's far from it. Israel is changing..the world is changing..and Israel needs to understand that..and I don't believe that it does..and there lies the long-term challenge

Some Brief Thoughts:

1) There was a military coup in Iran. As you know, I have written extensively about it..and the solutions offered by both the so-called liberals and conservatives are non-starters becuase they will be used by the gang currently in charge in Iran to suppress the mass movement. The regime is dead....but it will not go away quietly...I noted this six months ago when I feared that they would pull off a "Burma"...and they did...but the struggle goes on...and the non-violent movement will succeed;

2) Rwanada was where the world failed. Everyone knows that. The present President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, has done a maginficnent job to bring back Rwanda from those tragic days. Some of the things I read about Rwanda leads me to wonder why such wise men do not exist in other parts of the world;

3) Until Kim Jong-Il is alive, North Korea will muddle along. The only thing King Jong Il is interested in is Kim Jong Il and China will work to prop him up to avoid an economic and human catasrophe on its border...

4) As for Guatemala as an FYI, the Attorney General of Guatemala has indicted the head of the armed forces for forcing this so-called "criminal" from office...the only people who seemed to support the "coup" were Jim Demint and a few of the well paid lobbyists/mouthpieces for the coup government....

As for the UN itself, what you need to realize is that it is at the mercy of the member-states. I think the UN can do a lot better....but the UN has been supplanted in a major way by organizatoins such as the G20 and the World Economic Forum.....but some of the work the UN does is quite admirable and we have to make sure that we acknowledge that. The other we have to constantly guard against is being lazy and labeling people and ideas in simplistic ways.

I will remind you that two future Prime Ministers of Israel, Begin and Shamir, were also called terrorists at one time when they attacked British Interests...it depends on how you look at things....
Since alliances and times change, I will remind you that International Law has mandated a two state solution. Should we just discard International Law and let Israel do whatever it wants? Israel has a "god given" right to be a "jewish" state. If that is the case, then what about the 20% of the Country who is of Arab descent? This is like saying that the Hispanic Americans (now 16% of the American), and African Americans (which are about 15% of the country ) are to be foresaken because they are not white?
Israel has a right to defend itself...there is no question about it..but this right of "self-defense" can be done in a more responsible way that guarantees it a place in the community of nations. You need to visit http://www.jstreet.org/ and also take the time to read http://www.haaretz.com/ and http://peacenow.org/ and realize that what Bibi and his foreign minister say is not the only game in town in Israel.

wiser men have to prevail. I will remind you that it was the present President of Israel, who as FOreign minister fought for the Oslo Accord....I remember the LA Times headlines when he shouted in the Knesset that , "palestinians are humans, not two legged animals"....they deserve a chance to live in peace, in dignity, see their children grow and prosper...and not be subject to the brutality that is prevalent in Gaza today. The more this tragedy goes on, the more it bears resentment and hate. That's why Wiser men have to prevail upon and make those racists like Lieberman understand that their way is the wrong way.....

what gives Israelis the right to have palestinians live in Peace? Let me note this for you for reference: Hamas which Israel now brands a terrorist, was actually created by Israel..to counter Yasser Arafat's Fatah. Don't you find it strange that Israel is fighting against its' own creator?

The other question you need to think about is this: do two wrongs make a right?
