Hugo Chavez & The RussiansSeptember 7th 2008 06:08
Venezuela has announced that it wants to hold joint naval exercises with Russia in November. The only thing is a thumb at the United States, pure and simple. I find him to be funny and a bit of a buffon.
He wants to be create the 21st Century version of a socialist utopia. What I am seeing does not make me comfortable. Venezuela has underwritten Cuba to a large extent. It has been the primary supporter of Argentina by extending a financial lifeline to Nestor Kirchner in Argentina. This is quite a move, though. I wonder what the response of the Adminstration is going to be. This is so in light of the fact that Dick Cheney just got down with his visits to Ukraine and Georgia. Russians will not back down. The U.S. is stretched too thin right now. John McCain and Barack Obama should come out forcefully against such action. What is Chavez afraid of? I wonder the Chavez, the wild showman, can be tamed or not.

The Democratic Team Response.........September 6th 2008 19:46
I wanted to assess the response by the Democratic Team to the Republicans. I had written about his comments about , "..being called worst on the basketball court...". Here are his comments as posted on the Barack Obama Site..and continued it in his visit in Terre Haute Indiana earlier today :
I wrote about the "attempt" by the Obama campaign to shift the focus. There is no question that they're dealing from a weak hand and the economic data on Friday indicated it. The question is whether the Republicans will be successful in shifting the focus and the message from the past 8 years to gain another 4 years. What is certain is that the Republican faithful are energized and the media are just as energized as well. The reaction that the media has reported on to the Palin pheomenon has been from the faithful. Not withstanding her impressive personal story, the issue is outlook and vision for the future. I also caught glimpse of Joe Biden talking on Friday going after the Republicans. I was looking to see if a clip was available...I happened to find one on YouTube. He was on fire....fighting Joe Biden in top form: That's why I am sooooooooooooo excited about this campaign!!!

The Tragedy in EgyptSeptember 6th 2008 18:14
Mubarak, the dictator of Egypt, has been in power for almost 30 years. He calls himself President. I don't understand why he even bothers. The vast majority of Egyptians suffer and suffer daily. I was heartbroken when I saw the scenes from Egypt:

The U.S. Campaign: Day 2 (Reflections)September 6th 2008 17:05
I just visited Gallup and Rasumseen's sites. Gallup is giving Obama a 5% lead. Rasumseen is basically calling the race even. This morning's Financial Times headline was on Senator Obama trying to shift the debate back to the economy. The economy did have quite a dismal day yesterday. Over 80,000 jobs were lost. The "official" unemployment rate is over 6 percent. The actual unemployment rate if one factors in the discouraged, part timers and other groups of folks who are not counted is closer to 10%. So, it is a dismal picture out there. Foreclosures are an all time high.
The character and intergrity of candidates is right now the focus. I hope that the focus shifts. to the issues and what is to be done to combat the rise of healthcare, job creation, economic security and relations with the world. It will be a drawn-out, dirty campaign. Whomever is left standing will have quite a time bridging the divide within the U.S. and the world. I am excited and fascinated by the campaign and the future. Zardari is itSeptember 6th 2008 14:31
Zardari won the Presidency of Pakistan. Zardari is inherting a country that is being overwhelmed by Islamic insurgency and economic malaise. What is he going to do? Where will he take a nuclear-armed, desparate nation that can fall apart? As his election was being held, another bomb went off in Peshawar, killing 15 people.
Here are his comments, courtesy of the BBC

The Myth of John McCain Being The Worst Nightmare For Lobbyists...September 5th 2008 19:36
John McCain and his running mate told the country how they are Washington's worst nightmare. The first problem I have is that Senator McCain has been a part of the same crowd for 26 years. If a lie is told long enough, it turns out to be the truth. Despite all that has been said about the so-called "hostile" media, I think that John McCain has had one of the most favorable coverage there has been. Towards the end, I got sick of hearing about Senator McCain being a POW. I have said that his service must be honored and I do so. But, his love of America is no less than the millions of others who also believe in America and the promise it represents. As for lobbyists, no one talks about Charlie Black and and all the other lobbyist supremos who surround Senator McCain. Questions must be asked. They must be asked for the sake of the future.

The Republicans: The Day AfterSeptember 5th 2008 17:53
Well, for starters, Dick Morris just called it: John McCain has been elected President. What Dick and the rest of the pundits seem to forget that there are about 200 million of us who will vote on November 4. I admit that I do look at the polls to assess the status. Let's look to analyze what they have to say and how they are going to say it. The debates will play a profond part in realizing what direction the country will go.
Life does move on, though. Right now, Iraq's lauded achievements seem to be quite illusory. The Republicans claimed that we are about to win. This claim goes contrary to a front page story in today's Los Angeles Times noting that General Petraus is recommending against an immediate drawdown due to a increased fear that violence will in fact potentially pick up. In addition, the fact does in fact remain that Iraq has in fact gone through a defacto partition. Kurdistan has its' representatives at the UN, Jalal Talabani's son is the defacto Ambassador to the US and the region has its' own airline. So, this notion of a unified Iraq is a myth. Now, Barzani is playing a high stakes game to expand the Kurdistan region. So, this myth pushed by the Republicans is an outright lie. The Americans are stuck in the middle

The Republican National Convention: The Final Day (Reflections) (LINK)September 5th 2008 04:47
The Final Day of the Republican Convention is drawing to a close. Just like the Democratic Convention, it had its share of music, speeches and cheerleading yet again. The attack dogs were at it, though. The most notable one was Lindsay Graham. I respect Senator Graham for some of the principled stance he has taken. For instance, he bucked his party on Social Security. He bucked his party when he joined the so-called gang of 14 to help broker the compromise on filibusters. He has also served in Iraq because he was a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. But, his attacks on Senator Obama were in my view, simply sad. It was also pathetic because his message was that because Senator Obama opposed to war, his conduct was tantamount to treason.
Cindy McCain's eloquence was commendable in defense of her husband. I commend the able and eloquent writers who supported her in this endeavor. Cindy and John have been a hell of a team and I have written about both of them. Their commitment to America is absolute and their humanity should never be questioned. Senator McCain reminded us to get involved to help change Government. In this regard, he is absolutely right. He also paid homage to Senator Obama. As I listened to him, I also believed that we are indeed here to serve a cause better than ourselves. I have tried to do that as well and by the grace of the Lord, will continue to do so. Senator McCain also told us that "...Americans want us to stop yelling at each other..." and told the country that the Republicans will get back to the basics of the belief that has driven the Republicans. He implored all to fight for all that there is important

Obama & Fox NewsSeptember 4th 2008 06:52
There was a story buried on page 2 of yesterday's Financial Times about a truce being called between Senator Obama and Fox News. It was brokered, apparently, by Rupert Murdoch. That's a good thing. Senator Obama needs to make sure that Fox is also on his side. I can understand why Senator Obama was sore at Roger Ailes. I find this "peace" now plausible because Senator Obama is due to appear on Bill O'Reilly's The O'Reilly Factor Tomorrow. It will be quite a show I bet.
As for Bill O'Reilly, I find him "complicated". He was quite kind to Senator Obama when I briefly heard him after Senator Obama gave his acceptance speech. If I can catch the show, I will. It will be one of the few times I will watch Fox
