Mike Leach hired at Washington State, PAC-12 Title Game
December 1st 2011 00:33
Just one day after firing Paul Wulff, the Washington State Cougars have hired former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach. The Cougars want a high-powered offense and Leach will bring this.
Leach is set to become one of the top four highest paid coaches in the conference. He was fired in 2009 amidst controversy at Texas Tech, after gaining popularity as an offensive whiz. The Red Raiders during his nine year tenure was near the tops in the nation with offense. Washington State is 9-40 the last four years, meaning something needs to change. Leach is change.
Oregon and UCLA are set to face off in Friday's first ever PAC-12 title game. The Ducks are heavy favorite and with a 10-2 record versus a 6-6 team, you should be. The Bruins offense compares favorably to Nevada's who the Ducks stomped 69-20. Don't see this game even being remotely close. Too much offense versus a team who shouldn't even be there.
UCLA fired head coach Rick Neuheisel on Monday. The team may play hard for Neuheisel in his final game at the school. That is UCLA's only hope. They won't be able to stop the Ducks running game, or passing game. UCLA has a decent running game themselves with the duo of Jonathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman, but no where as good as the Ducks trio of LaMichael James, Kenyon Barber, and DeAnthony Thomas.
The Mid-American title game is taking place at the same time and if you want a close game tune into that. Ohio and Northern Illinois are entering the game with solid records. 9-3 for Ohio and 10-2 for Northern Illinois. The Huskies from Northern Illinois are keyed by senior quarterback Chandler Hornish. On the year, Hornish has 23 touchdowns and four interceptions. Plus he leads the team in rushing with 1,351 yards. The Huskies have won their last seven games on the year.
Ohio is keyed by Tyler Tettleton has 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He can also run, with 576 rushing yards on the year. Donte Harden leads the team in rushing yards with 866.
This game should be fun to watch. Gotta go with Northern Illinois in a squeaker.

Leach was only interviewed by UM because of his ties to Plank. Did anyone else interview Leach in all of FBS? Not sure. But if 'yes' - it wasn't many, nor were there any major schools doing it. Probably a reason for that (lawsuit baggage, player treatment), right?. UM probably also wanted stability at the HC spot - and Edsall gives that more than Leach (ie - not viewing the position as a stepping stone in his own career).
