GMs say Spurs will be champs this year

NBA GMs: Spurs to win it all

According to a preseason poll of the NBA's general managers, the San Antonio Spurs will win another title. They also said LeBron James will earn his first MVP award, Brandon Roy will be the rookie of the year, Pat Riley of the Miami Heat will take the best coach honors, and Kobe Bryant is the player they want taking a shot when a game is on th line.

ESPN said all but two of the GMs responded to the NBA.com survey.

If you recall your recent NBA history, the Spurs lost to the Dallas Mavericks in last year's Western Conference semifinals. You'll also observe a trend in San Antionio's championships: 1999, 2003, 2005.

See anything fishy?

No, not that they didn't win a title in two straight years. They were all in odd-numbered years. So this year, the Spurs might win it all because it's the 2007 season, an odd-numbered year!

It sounds ridiculous, but it could happen. The team's offseason moves seemed right, though you'll never really know until the season starts. The most interesting of them is the signing of Francisco Elson, Eric Williams and Matt Bonner.

These acquisitions seemed to show that the Spurs are preparing for the Mavericks. Elson is a quick, seven-footer with good rebounding averages; while Bonner is a 6-10 center that shoots the three. Williams is a good defender with low-post moves.

These were the kind of talents the Spurs needed during that Dallas series because:

A) Their big men, Robert Horry and Nazr Mohammed, were neutralized. Horry is not quite his original Houston-Rockets-small-forward self in terms of speed (because of his weight and age), and the Mavs ran circles around Mohammed. The Spurs needed quickness to keep up with their opponent.

B) A center/three-pointer like Bonner would cause a lot of nightmare mismatches, especially when he plays at the perimiter, keeping his defender outside the paint and opening up the floor.

C) The Spurs needed more perimiter defenders. Let's face it: all the Spurs saw during the series were the backs of the Dallas guards' jerseys. With help in the perimiter D, the story just might change during the next playoffs, unless the Mavs are eliminated by another team (like the Suns).

Partial results of the GMs' preseason poll was reported by ESPN, and the complete tally will be available at NBA.com at Wednesday this week.

Kings coach arrested for drunk driving

Musselman
Where's the profile shot?
The Kings fired Rick Adelman for this guy? Eric Musselman's season hasn't officially begun (it's still in the preseason), and he's already causing an embarrasment to the franchise.

According to the ESPN report, Musselman was pulled over last Saturday, around 2am at about 1˝ miles from the State Capitol after his car was seen making a right-hand turn from the left-hand lane and cutting off another vehicle.

He may have celebrated too early over his team's victory over the Utah Jazz hours earlier. Sheesh. The only thing worth getting drunk over is if you beat the Mavericks or the Spurs in a playoff series. The Jazz haven't even been in the playoffs for a while.

Musselman failed a series of sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11. The legal limit is 0.08.

Can anyone please tell me again why the Kings hired Musselman? He's is almost as embarrasing as Stephen Jackson's recent stunt.

The only thing Musselman can do to make up for this is, umm, 60 wins and going beyond the second round. After all, their roster isn't partcularly championship worthy.

Thanks to ESPN for the image

Warhammer Online shows off concept art

October 21st 2006 01:49
Warhammer is currently a hot franchise, thanks to the the efforts of Relic Entertainment, which came out with Dawn of War and its Dark Crusade expansion.

It's not all Relic however, as other developers join the fray. Mythic Entertainment, the makers of Dark Age of Camelot, is currently working on Warhammer Online: The Age of Reckoning.

While it's hard to say for sure how the game is going despite the current crop of previews (journalists usually hold off on the comments till a game comes out, and say stuff like "X is shaping up well" for politeness' sake), we mortals can always gawk at concept art--a practice that is said to keep the game in our collective radar.

Well, search no more. I've got just the pics for you. I doubt though if they can sustain you until the game comes out at Q4 2007, a whole year from now.

The Warriors hitting Sony’s portable

October 20th 2006 04:45
Rockstar Games, the controversial publisher of Bully and Grand Theft Auto games, announced that The Warriors will be making its way to the PSP. Developed by Rockstar Leeds and Rockstar Toronto, The Warriors for the PSP is set to hit North American and European retail shelves this holiday season.

If you want to take The Warriors with you when commuting to work or school, granted that you don’t get mugged like some iPod owners, then the PSP version would be good news. Still, one can’t help but question why they should bother buying the PSP version when they could play it in their aging-but-still-adequate PlayStation 2, which would obviously be safer

Postal III coming to PC, Xbox 360

October 20th 2006 03:47
Some people never learn. Running With Scissors, the creators behind the woeful Postal franchise, announced development of Postal III, the first game in the series aimed at both the computer and videogame console markets.

Currently in development for the Xbox 360 and PC systems, Postal III will use the Source engine. Not that Valve's creation would save the series from mediocrity

No doubt about it. We just love Destroy All Humans. If you've finished the game, then chances are, you're aware of the ending's hint of a sequel.

If you've been keeping track the news, Destroy All Humans 2 was announced last April, and it will be set in the swinging 60s this time around. The Cold War, hippies, aliens, spies, and ninjas are a dynamite combination

Final Fantasy is overrated

September 17th 2006 18:08
Flame bait? Not at all. Am I trying to be cool? Whatever for? I’m a journalist, and I’m self-assured. If I let every comment about what I say get to me, then I shouldn’t be in this line of work.

People say it has become “cool” to hate Final Fantasy in the Internet, and you might think I’m just jumping at the bandwagon

Whatever happened to Rodman?

September 14th 2006 17:28
Love him or hate him, Dennis Rodman will always be an NBA legend.

Sure, Rodman’s antics on and off the court drove people nuts. He dyed his hair in colors you would never imagine. He gave referee Ted Bernhardt a vicious head butt during a game against the Nets in March 1996. He kicked cameraman Eugene Amos in the groin the year after. He skipped practice to wrestle. Etcetera. Etcetera

Devil May Cry 4 to pull a Raiden?

September 12th 2006 10:21
Hideo Kojima may have learned his lesson the hard way in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but apparently, Devil May Cry 4’s director Hideaki Itsuno and producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi haven’t realized it yet.

GameSpot reported that Dante, the series’ popular protagonist, is being replaced in the upcoming installment. According GameSpot, Dante won't be the lead character in part four because he has “peaked out” in the last game, and the introduction of Nero, the new central character, “levels the playing field for veterans and new players

The Castlevania series, while squeezed through great lengths, offer a distinct advantage in storyline: other people can pick up the whip against Dracula, or whoever evil vampire with medieval/gothic real estate.

Besides, the shift to use other characters other than Simon Belmont has been done years ago. Konami has created so many vampire hunters other than Simon, and has committed no story in the Castlevania canon that the franchise is about Dracula and Simon alone.

DMC however, has always been stuck with Sparda and Dante. And Vergil. Why? Because of The Divine Comedy, of course.

Sure, they can start adding in new characters and expand Sparda's family tree, but IMHO, it's a bit too late for that. Dante has apparently developed a cult following of sorts (just like Solid Snake).

Just how Dante-crazy are some game fans? People dress up as Dante in cosplay contests and events, Dante has appeared in a handful of games other than DMC (and much more than Simon Belmont), and don't forget the Devil May Cry novel.
