The Migraineur - by Julia

Travel Tips for Migraine Sufferers

September 14th 2006 19:36
If you are anything like me (i.e. you suffer migraines) you'll find that holidays can cause a whole heap of problems you never anticipated. How do I know this? I'm sitting here in my hotel room with a cold compress on the back of my neck, headached-out on holiday.

As all migraineurs know, it's all in the triggers. Triggers, for the uninitiated, are those things that set your noggin off on that personal road to hell known as a migraine. Triggers can be anything from strawberries, to margueritas, to flashing lights to stress and sleeplessness.

Now if you are going to have any kind of fun holiday, it will usually entail strawberries, flashing lights, sleeplessness and most definitely margeuritas! A holiday can be a trigger minefield!

So what's a migraineur to do?

* Firstly, try to spread out your triggers. Have strawberries today, sleeplessness tomorrow and flashing lights the day after. This was my personal downfall.

* Prepare in advance to head off a headache. If your doctor has prescribed medication, ask them if it is OK to take it preventatively.

* Go easy on your body. Massages work wonders for some people in reducing their migraines and tension headaches, if this works for you it might be a good antidote the day after your trigger indulgence. That's going to be my excuse, at any rate.

* Wear seriously dark shades to reduce glare, another common headache trigger. These look cool, too.

* Reduce stress as much as possible. You can do this by planning your holiday down to the last detail to reduce the chance of things going wrong, but it may just be a good excuse to refuse to take your mother-in-law along with you.

I'm going to bed now, because the keyboard is looking kind of wiggy.
