Migraine Basic Comfort Ideas
February 25th 2008 22:24
Migraine has progressively taken over my life.I am determined to fight back.Part of that fight is blogging.I want to reach out to other migraineurs and help them with what I know works for me.
Migraine is a disease.I know I was lost when I was first diagnosed. The worst part for me is the pain.I used to fear the next migraine attack. Now,it is migraine 24/7 with a high level of pain.
I would have to say, almost as bad as the pain is the disrespect that comes with it.I can't count the number of times I've gone to the er and after hearing the word migraine, the sighs, the rolling of the eyes, and "oh,a headache."
Finding any sort of comfort during a migraine can mean so much.I have my favorites that bring me comfort.I have kind of a migraine comfort kit.
I keep several fleece throws handy. If I do have to make a run to the er,I take them with me.The last time I went, once I got into a room I asked for a pillow. The nurse never brought one,so one throw served as a pillow, another to cover me,those rooms are always cold. And the third came in handy to cover my eyes from the lights.
I have my bedroom painted a soft green.Dark curtains as it's important to keep out the light during a migraine. My room is not "busy".If I have to lay down during a high level of migraine, the room needs to keep the softness of the color of the walls.
I keep a sound machine next to the bed.I need quiet, but if it's too quiet, that's almost as bad as too much noise.I can choose the sound and the volume that I need at that time.
In my "med" bag,I keep my daily meds and for me,motion sickness pills.I've had times when just moving my head at all will send me into a cycle of vomiting, dry heaving for hours.Since I've kept these in my bag, they have saved me.
It may be a good idea to have an eye mask.Even without a migraine,to sleep with,it may help you avoid waking up to a migraine.
My advice,if you feel a migraine coming, take what med you are given to abort it.Don't wait for the pain to escalate.I used to get an aura before a migraine.Zig zag lines, dots, some people get flashing lights, blurred vision. That's the time to take your med.
On a daily basis, make sure you drink plenty of water.Don't skip meals.I suggest keeping a headache diary. That way you can track triggers.Stress is a big one for me.Everyone has stress in their life. Most of the time I think I'm handling it pretty good. For me,it's after things have settled down that the pain level rises.
Weather is another trigger for me.It just started to be this year. Some triggers you can't avoid. But you may find things that can be.Foods, beverages, even certain lighting. When I leave the house,I have my sunglasses with me.Daytime, they are on me.In the store,I wear them.Usually I have a ballcap on.So that means I may have to bring them with me at night. If I know I'm going to be in bright light, sunglasses and a ballcap are needs.
Just some ideas that may be helpful.
