Typically when I hear the word "pop" in music I tend to cringe a bit, not to say there is not talent out there in this genre, but it seems almost completely synonymous at this point with lip synching...after all most do not write their own songs how are they supposed to remember the lyrics...and just half-naked girls dancing around and strutting their stuff which is always entertaining, but hardly music, at least in my opinion.

Girlicious

Pictured left to right: Nichole Cordova, Chrystina Sayers, Natalie Mejia and Tiffanie Anderson.

Girlicious is a new girl group that was just formed by Robin Antin, who we all know and love for bringing us The Pussycat Dolls. Girlicious is not your typical pop group and these girls are definitely not your average pop tarts.

I watched the making of Girlicious from the very beginning, and was really interested in the group from the get-go even before the four final girls were actually chosen, because the contestants - most of them anyway - were actually very talented. They were more than just beautiful, they could really sing and dance, and Robin Antin brought her Pussycat Doll like style which I loved - sassy and classy.

The girls wear stunning, sexy outfits but always look sophisticated and modern, and they may not write their own songs but I at least give them kudos for having the vocals and the moves down pat. They are very entertaining to watch and listen to, and if you have to go pop, there's no better way to go than with these lovely ladies.

Underrated: Andrew WK

Andrew WK

Andrew WK is a man who definitely wants to bring the party atmosphere back to concerts. You may remember first seeing him, as I do, from a music video of him running mad around a house, blood dripping everywhere...good times.

We have not heard too much from him over the past year or so, but he is definitely still out there and absolutely worth listening to. Your parents may not approve and if they see any of his videos they may send you to your room...even if you are 25...but as a rather selective fan, let me tell you, this is a real musician.

Andrew WK released his first album, I Get Wet, in 2002, which ended up causing quite a bit of controversy with censors as a result of the cover showing WK with a badly bloodied nose, blood dripping down his face and neck. The album was still released, but with a black sticker put on the CD shrink wraps to cover the bloody area...we can have nudity and drug innuendos but a little blood is of serious concern? Hmm...

In any case, the first album ended up rising to the #1 position on Billboard's "Heatseekers" list, and has been a favorite in my collection since it was availbale on shelves.

If you are interested in finding out more about WK and information on tour dates you can check out his website.

Let me tell you the story of how I first heard of Scarlet Sins. I was hanging out relaxing one night with some friends and had the radio on Edge 102.1 - gotta love it. This amazing song came on which I later found out was titled Strange Love, and absolutely loved it. You can check it out on YouTube to see these girls rocking out for yourself.

I heard them announce the song saying it was an all girl band but to be honest I thought they got the songs mixed up because I had never heard a rocker chick sound like this before, it was really incredible.

I looked up the band the next day, Scarlet Sins, to find out that they were in fact a female band and that they had an entire album of outstanding songs, its pretty much perfection from start to finish.

Not only is this Canadian band quickly making their name on the music scene but they are also drop dead gorgeous - hey, I'm a chick too, I'm allowed to say that.

Scarlet Sins

Sylvya NuVynska brings the heavy hitting vocals, Cristina Bishop on lead guitar, Tanya Nicklaus rocking the bass and Elle Bertrand slamming the drums.

These hard rocking ladies make me proud to be a female and prove to everyone out there that girls can bring it every bit as hard as guys. They are definitely not your typical band, and you should take a listen yourself to see what I mean. Their low-end rhythms intertwine with melodic verses and soaring choruses to create guttural epics.

They wrote all the songs on their album which is something I think is very respectable, something that we do not get to see as much these days. Although they bring us heavy metal music to the maximum, they are still melodic and contemporary so they are really bringing heavier music into a newer time. Even if you are not a heavy metal fanatic, you will still want to take a listen.

I will definitely keep you all posted with any news on these ladies and information on tour dates and such in the future. In the meantime, make some space for the rising stars of Scarlet Sins on your iPod.

Judas Priest

Ok, so for all you Canadian metal fans out there, you'll be glad to know that Judas Priest is coming to Toronto. Tickets went on sale via Ticketmaster on April 25, and although tickets went fast, there are still some available, including through sites such as Ticket Triangle and StubHub

Welcome

May 14th 2008 14:35
Hi all, my name is Michelle and I am and always have been an avid music fan. I enjoy pretty much all music genres, although I certainly have to say I favor metal, alternative, and good ole rock and roll.

I always check out Orble for music information and now have the opportunity to write for them, which is really exciting. The best part about writing is when you find a niche that you are experienced with and can have a lot of fun with, so this fits me perfectly

haha, well I like Linkin Park too so I guess I am a nerd, admittedly lol...I definitely put Andrew WK above Linkin Park though he's definitely not one of my favorite musicians but his first album I really enjoyed, glad to hear you will be checking him out

Np. I know that they tour around Canada but I will definitely check to see if they are touring elsewhere, namely Sydney and will be sure to make a post on this in the near future.

Thanks
