Men and Christmas
December 2nd 2011 18:00
With the holiday season in full swing it’s the time of year when men and women shop for gifts to give to their loved ones. For women it is a time that they look forward to. For men it is a time that we could do without.
Not that we don’t mind getting gifts for our girlfriends or wives. We like to give gifts that show our love. We just don’t like to go through the hassle of getting them. If it were up to us, there really would be a Santa Claus we could give our money to and tell him what to bring.
It is well known that men and women look at shopping much differently. Women look at it as a time to browse and spend time with their girlfriends. Men look at it as a time when they have to cut time out of their schedule and spend time in a crowded mall. I have yet to meet a man who says he enjoys shopping. Here is why.
For men, the holidays are stressful, because we aren’t good at shopping and aren’t really sure what to get for our girlfriends or wives. We feel that not only do we need to get a gift that she likes, but one her friends do as well. We also feel like we have to get her a gift much better than the one she gets us. Christmas only comes once a year and you have to do it right.
Add to this the fact that we have to go shopping in order to accomplish this and you get my drift.
And women are lucky today. I grew up in an era when men didn’t go shopping and the only gift a woman got was ‘Merry Christmas.’ I swear to this day I have not seen my parents exchange gifts. My father may have given my mother money to buy something, but never a gift.
Today, every woman that I know that’s in a relationship expects and often gets a gift as it should be. But you need to know that for us men there was no formal training for this. We weren’t taught by our fathers that Christmas or any other gifts are important. That doesn’t mean we don’t want to buy you something. It just means we are the first generation of men who have really had to.
And it’s not something we are good at despite what television tells you.
So ladies understand where we are coming from. And know that we are teaching the next generation of men much better than our fathers taught us.
