Jeannine, I totally agree with you on this. It was such a gorgeous movie - beautiful to watch and listen to. Regarding the credits, I was blown away. This was the first movie I have watched where not one member of the audience moved until the credits were completely over (and that's saying a lot considering the number of films I go to!). Just goes to show how many people just love this film and Keats' poetry.

He'd be great as Captain Von Trappe in a remake of the Sound of Music. He is the nephew of Rosemary Clooney after all so must have inherited some of her singing talent. Also he has the presence and beauty to carry off this role. There would be none better.

on On the Beach

I grew up on a farm just outside of Berwick, not unlike that in the movie. When I was young, Berwick was still a town, but as you've said this is no longer the case. It's suburban sprawl. I remember the older people often talking about the days when 'On The Beach' was filmed and how exciting it was for the community. They are still bitter about the famous quote by Ava Gardner, even though we know know that this was fabricated and she didn't call Melbourne the 'end of the earth' at all! Great review of a great film. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. It relayed my feelings, exactly, on this film. It was touching and tender. I cried, which is not unusual . I totally agree that the middle section was a bit without purpose and probably could have been cut a bit. It was still a beautiful film though and the music was amazing.

on Departures

I found this movie to be one of the most moving I have ever seen. I really related to it. Firstly, I used to be an organ donor coordinator so have faced the angst of those who thought that dealing with the 'departed' was abhorent. Little do they know what an absolute privilege it is to be able to provide some comfort to the grieving at such a sad time. I was very, very lucky to have such a special job and to see that Daigo shared the same feeelings as I did was very touching. He was so graceful and compassionate. My heart was breaking at the beauty of his work. Secondly, having recently lost my own mother, this film moved me in ways I could never have imagined. If only we did this special ceremony for our own deceased love ones. What an amazing race the Japanese are. I am in awe!

I think I may have this book hidden away in a bookcase somewhere. If I can find it, would you like to borrow it?

Yes, I remember that bit! How could one forget? Tacky! Tacky! Tacky! I can without a doubt say that that bit was not in the book
