Basque Tapas & Wine, Prahran

February 6th 2011 10:31
http://basque.com.au/

This is a very popular little tapas restaurant on Chapel Street, Prahran. It is more suited to tables of 2-4 patrons, so if you'd like to go with a larger group be sure to book well in advance.

My party of 8 had a very enjoyable dinner for a colleague's farewell.
We figured the easiest thing to do was to select a dish or two each to share. We had:
- Jamon Serrano (Traditional salt cured Spanish ham)
- Queso Manchego (Traditionl Spanish cured cheese plate)
--> We had also ordered some bread which never came out. The cheese and ham were ok on their own, but would have tasted quite nice if they were both together with some bread as well.

- Calamares a la Andaluza (crispy salt & pepper quid served with aioli)
--> This was delicious!! Nicely salty, and delicious aioli. Only problem was that we probably should have ordered 3 plates of it to share instead of 2!

- Bolas de Pescado con Romesco (Prawn, calamari & fish balls served with romesco)
--> These were fairly unremarkable... possibly as we didn't know who ordered them so we spent more time trying to figure that out than actually enjoying them!

- Tortilla Espanola (typical potato tortilla served with aioli)
--> YUM! I only had a couple of mouthfuls, but it was delicious. Tasted like there was some cheese mixed in with the potatoes as well...mmm!

- Espinacas a la Catalana (Sauteed spinach with pine nuts & raisins)
-->The raisins were an unusual addition to the spinach and pine nuts, but it was quite a tastey side dish which I quite happily finished off

- Albondigas con pisto de tomate (Meatballs in Spanish style pisto sauce)
--> This was the last dish to come out, and was a little cold. Not particularly tastey...just tasted like plain old meatballs to me!

- Pinxtos de Pollo Adobados (Thyme, rosemary and red wine marinated chicken skewer)
--> This was quite nice, but the menu is very literal - skewer is singular, so there is only one to share!

- Paella Valenciana please (Paella of wild rabbit, chicken and vegetables)
--> I personally stayed away from the rabbit (can't say it's really my thing) but the rice in the paella was nice.

Overall, I wouldn't rave about the food however the waitstaff were all very pleasant and attentive, and the Sangria, while very strong, was also very good!! If I'm in the mood for tapas, I'll come back here again.

One additional unusual note - the bathrooms are separate! I followed the sign to the toilets and ended up on the street outside. After enquiring with the kitchen staff, I was instructed to go back outside, to the right, up the first flight of stairs, up another flight of stairs (past the massage & dance centre) and presto - bathrooms!! I must say, after my little trek they were cleaner than I was expecting!

BearBrass,Southgate

January 9th 2011 08:31
I went for dinner and drinks at BearBrass, Southgate on Saturday 8th January: Really Long Link

My friend and I both had friends visiting from interstate, but as we were both quite skint til payday we were looking for somewhere reasonably priced to go, and decided to try BearBrass after a recommendation from a friend.

When we first arrived it was a bit confusing as to what was the order of play, what with a bouncer at the door (that's right, a bouncer!) but no front of house/maitre'd-type person to seat us. We wandered inside and were told by a waitress to take a seat where we liked - we actually had to wait a few minutes for a table to become available and took this as a good sign!

We sat there for a fair while (about an hour) having a drink while waiting for one of the boys to arrive and were not hassled at all by the waiters (ie: no hurrying us up to order etc) which was very pleasant. It was very nice sitting outside by the Yarra, watching the world go by for a bit.

When we finally came to order, we went for the roast pumpkin, three cheese & caramelised onion tartlet with watercress & vine ripened baby tomatoes ($13.50), pumpkin, field mushroom, pesto, beetroot & goats cheese pizza ($16), chicken, mushroom, bacon, parmesan & bbq sauce pizza ($17) and the prosciutto, slow roast tomato, mozzarella, rocket & parmesan pizza ($15.50).

The tart came from the 'Something Small' section of the menu. The serving was indeed quite small, it would be good for a light lunch, but my friend informed me that it really was quite filling.

The pizzas all came out on wooden boards so I quite liked the presentation (not original, I know, but still nice) and they were a decent size for one person. Not sure if I would have finished all of mine (a friend had one slice) but for a man it would have been a decent serving. They had a nice crispy base, quite thin, only complaint was that it was quite hard to cut through the base of the pizzas with the knives that we had.

Overall it was quite an enjoyable meal in a casual, relaxed setting, and I would definitely go back for another very reasonably priced meal. (The setting does help though as I'm a sucker for anything close to the water! )

Amigos, Chapel Street

December 12th 2010 09:56
I recently went to Amigos mexican restaurant on Chapel Street, South Yarra: www.amigos.com.au - the food was delicious!

As soon as I walked in, the smell hit me - YUM. I haven't been struck with such a smell when I walked into a restaurant in quite some time!

I had the Signature Burrito with Chicken and Sweetcorn for $26 and it was absolutely delicious. I wasn't able to finish it, it was just slightly too big, which was the only disappointing thing of the evening - having to leave some behind!

There was a group of 10 of us (make sure you book ahead as it was packed out) and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Others had the Signature Burrito with Chicken & Mushroom, Chicken Enchillada & Paella.

I have friends visiting Melbourne next month and am already planning on taking them here. I'd definitely recommend trying it out.
