Melbourne IT rip off scam

March 14th 2009 01:53
If it’s shoddy customer service at a ridiculously high price you’re after, then look no further than Melbourne IT.

What a joke my dealings with this bunch have been. These guys have been hosting a website for me, and when the domain name was coming up for renewal at the end of January they started bombarding my email with reminder notices.

Now I know that the price of domain name registration varies greatly, but the whopping $140 they were asking simply to renew the name had me baffled.

After holding for close to twenty-five minutes, I finally got through to an operator and firstly enquired as to why the monthly invoice emails had stopped coming. We discovered that my email address had not been updated.
Wondering why I was still receiving renewal notices then, I was told that the domain name email had been updated but not the hosting account details.

“Could we fix that up now?” I wondered, and my helpful customer service rep cheerfully informed me that she could not do it, that I would have to go online and do it myself. – As I had done months earlier.

So I then enquired as to why I was being charged $140 for a service I could easily get for $40. What exactly am I getting for that extra $100? and in the same merry tone she replied “Our customer service.”

Not much of that yet, so I asked if I could please get copies of the missing invoices sent to my email. For this she needed to transfer me.
So I waited on hold for another ten minutes and asked again for the missing invoices. I was told that I would have to go online and get them myself.
Where is that service I’m paying so much for?

I shopped around and ended up using netregistry and renewing the name for about $40.

I had a few more problems with the Melbourne IT email address not updating. Every time I called I had to hold for over twenty minutes, and nobody I spoke to could do anything anyway - everything has to be done online from the users end.
How they hell can they charge $100 for customer service when you have to do everything yourself?

Leaving the hosting with them for a couple of months, yesterday I tried to cancel it.
Again I waited twenty minutes on hold only to be told that I would have to go online and cancel it myself.
I also asked why I was still being charged a monthly fee for the domain name, which had been registered somewhere else two months ago?

My helpful rep explained that it was all part of a package so it would just keep billing at that price regardless – good way to make money I guess - But once I’d cancelled online it would all break apart and sort itself out. Whatever that means!
Oh and the email address still hadn't updated!

Not trusting this solely to their automated system, I wanted confirmation that I would not be billed for any future months. But this could not be guaranteed. I was reassured however, that once it had ‘sorted itself out’, if there was an overcharge I would be refunded.
So will I be refunded the overcharged domain name registration for the last two months also? Oh no, they do not refund on that –well of course!
