Melbourne Celebration of the Life of Dorothy Porter

March 22nd 2009 03:04

Dorothy Porter
26 March 1954 - 10 December 2008

Dorothy came to world acclaim in 1994 with the publication of The Monkey’s Mask, the world’s first lesbian crime novel. It has since been made into a film, two different stage adaptions, a radio play and set as a school text. Her other crime verse novels include What a Piece of Work (1999) and El Dorado (2007). A long-time member of Sisters in Crime, she sponsored the Dorothy Porter Award for Best Crime Story in Verse (now the Dorothy Porter Award for Innovation) in Sisters in Crime’s annual Scarlet Stiletto Awards.

It has poems, articles and information about Dorothy Porter - including a Camera Poetica recording of the author's perfect rendition of this poem

Trouble

‘Jill’
I challenge the mirror
'how much guts have you got?’

I like my courage
physical
I like my courage
with a dash of danger

In between insurance jobs
I’ve been watching
rock climbers
like game little spiders
on my local cliff

I’ve got no head for heights
but plenty of stomach
for trouble

trouble
deep other-folks trouble
to spark my engine
and pay my mortgage

and private trouble
oh, pretty trouble

to tidal-wave my bed

I’m waiting

I want you, trouble,
on the rocks.

Dorothy Porter's passing is a huge loss to the Australian literary scene. She was talented, witty and thoughtful. The Celebration of her Life will be an amazing night.

Hi bookgirl,
It sounds like it will be a great night. Dorothy Porter had a unique talent. And so sad to have died so young.

Well, at least I know now why we fell out.

Hi David,
I have friends whose beliefs are, in some ways, diametrically opposite to mine. And I have had disagreements with most people of my acquaintance (including my quite large family) - sometimes to the point of 'not speaking' for some time. After a while most arguments just seem pointless. I like you. Let's be friends.
