Alright guys. Let's face it. The truth of the matter is, not all of us can afford to have a million red roses delivered, or sacrifice our paycheck for a really expensive dinner. Some of us can, of course, but for those of us on a tighter budget, I thought I'd bring up a few things that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Who doesn't love a nice relaxing day cuddled on the couch with their loved one? Well, since this day has a theme, I thought I'd introduce you to a few movies and songs that would be perfect for a low-cost, high-impact Valentine's Day. The movies and music I'll be showcasing are all available at your local Wal-Mart.

The 'Pass the Kleenex' List

Looking for a movie that really sets an emotional stage? Are you the kind of girl (or guy) who loves a good romance movie...even if the waterworks start acting up? Check out a few of these movies!

P.S I Love You

This movie, sporting an all-star cast including Gerard Butler, Hillary Swank, Lisa Kudrow, Kathy Bates, James Marsters and many more busted into theatres in 2007. Holly (Swank) and Gerry (Butler) are made for each other, but when the unthinkable happens, Holly (with help from Gerry and her friends) has to find a way to deal. This movie will have you smiling and crying at the same time, and is definitely top of my list of must-see romance flicks.

City of Angels

Check out the heavenly combination of Meg Ryan and Nicholas Cage in City of Angels. Maggie (Rice) is a doctor, and her picture of life leaves no room for god, miracles, or angels. She doesn't believe in such things. But when things take a turn and she meets an angel named Seth (Cage), Maggie begins to question everything. A romance begins, and Seth finds himself falling from grace and falling for Maggie.

A Walk to Remember

Shane West and Mandy Moore team up for the movie adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel A Walk to Remember. Jamie Sullivan (Moore) is the reverend's daughter. She's a plain girl with a big heart, and has never taken the time to care what anyone thinks of her. Landon Carter (West) is in with the in-crowd, and has spent most of his life shunning Jamie and putting on a face for everyone. When the unlikely pair is brought together, something happens that neither of them expect: they begin to fall in love. Nothing is ever quite that easy though, and several obstacles threaten to tear the young couple apart. While Jamie fights for her life, Landon fights for her, and everything as they once knew it begins to change...

The 'Laugh Until You Cry' List

Not really into romance drama? Well, if you're up for some laughs on this lovely V-Day, check out a few of these movies. They're bound to have you laughing, and to keep you laughing, and are definitely a good alternative to the tear-jerkers mentioned above.

Just Like Heaven

Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo star in this romantic comedy that forces to ask a very interesting question: What happens when the person you fall in love with isn't exactly...alive? David (Ruffalo) moves into a great apartment, complete with furniture...and an unexpected house guest. Elizabeth (Witherspoon) was the apartment's previous tenant, and she isn't exactly alive. The two don't exactly get off on the right foot to begin with, but eventually, sparks begin to fly. The only problem? Well, Elizabeth might be the perfect girl for David, but she's also completely unavailable...obviously. When David discovers he has a chance to save Elizabeth, he has to race against time...while proving to everyone else that he hasn't completely lost his marbles along the way.

Sweet Home Alabama

Another Witherspoon movie. In this one, she stars opposite Josh Lucas. Melanie (Witherspoon) is a successful, smart woman with the perfect fiance and a fashion career on the fast-track...but like everyone, she's got a few skeletons in her closet. One of those skeletons? Her husband, Jake. Melanie has to leave her new home in New York and head back home to Alabama, where her reputation truly precedes her. But being around Jake again opens a whole new can of worms, and it just may be that Melanie's homecoming is much more than she thought it would be...

10 Things I Hate About You

Starring Julia Stiles and the late and great Heath Ledger, this movie is a modern take on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, set in a high school. Kat (Stiles) doesn't care what anyone thinks of her, and is generally avoided by the rest of the student body. Pat (Ledger) is a social outcast and has been labeled a bad boy...but when another student pays him to take Kat on a few dates, things get interesting very fast. They begin to fall for one another, but when the truth comes out, it threatens to destroy their budding romance...

The Power of Love...Songs

Okay, so maybe you're not really into the movie scene. That's okay. Some people prefer to set the mood with music. The only problem? There's a lot of it out there. Here's a few that might help set the mood when you're at a loss for what to do...

1. "Let's Get it On" by Marvin Gaye
2. "Some Hearts" by Carrie Underwood
3. "Here Without You" by 3 Doors Down
4. "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston
5. "Let's Make Love" by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
6. "My Valentine" by Martina McBride
7. "All My Life" by KC and JoJo
8. "Always" by Jon Bon Jovi
9. "Amazed" by Lonestar
10. "Back at One" by Brian McKnight
11. "Hanging By a Moment" by Lifehouse
12. "Lost in Love" by Air Supply
13. "I've Had the Time of My Life" by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
14. "Head Over Feet" by Alanis Morsette
15. "Every Breath You Take" by the Police
16. "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me" by Faith Hill
17. "More Than Words" by Extreme
18. "Missing You Now" by Michael Bolton
19. "Let Love Lead the Way" by the Spice Girls
20. "Dreaming of You" by Selena
21. "Dream Lover" by Mariah Carey
22. "Glory of Love" by Bette Midler
23. "Sailing" by Rod Stewart
24. "I Wanna Love You Forever" by Jessica Simpson
25. "Hero" by Mariah Carey

Hopefully I've got a little bit of something in there for everyone, but as we all know, lists like these could go on and on. Let's hope that these at least help spark some ideas for those of you who might be hoping for a nice night indoors.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Hear ye, hear ye, Stephanie Meyers fans! Those of you who have followed the tale of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in the Twilight series were probably no doubt lined up at the theaters this November when Summit Entertainment released its take on the first book, Twilight. The movie starred Kristen Stewart as quirky and clumsy Bella Swan, and Rob Pattinson as hunky vampire-boy Edward Cullen. The movie was an instant explosive success, and quickly became its own little phenomenon. Now, most Twilight saga fans I've talked to either absolutely loved the movie, or weren't very fond of it at all. I happen to be a special case. After literally being dragged to the movie despite an intense hatred of the books, I found myself rereading not only Twilight, but the rest of the series as well, and I found when I did that I liked the series a lot more than I initially thought I did. Twilight fan? Yes, please.

Any of you who have been to a mall or walked past a Hot Topic store front have probably noticed that Hot Topic stores are making some serious bank off of the Twilight series...just as they did when Harry Potter exploded onto the scene several years ago. Now, you won't find me complaining. Who wouldn't want a poster of the Cullen family hotties, or their own vampire body glitter?

...Okay, so maybe that last one is a bit of a stretch, but it's still pretty amusing when you think about it. Another perk of Hot Topic's fixation on the Twilight phenomenon?

Several months ago with the release of the Twilight movie soundtrack, Hot Topic held a listening party. You know how that goes: browse the store, buy a poster or two, squee like the fangirl that you are when Rob Pattinson's voice comes over the speakers...

Hot Topic's Twilight listening parties were a huge success all over the place. I didn't go to the listening party. I was still in my 'I hate Twilight' phase. But for those Twilight fans who missed that fun little opportunity, Hot Topic is delivering another...this time for the movie release.

Oh yes. You heard me right, Twilight-lovers. No offense to Amazon, but why pre-order your copy of the movie online when you can go to your local mall, walk into Hot Topic, and pay $22.99 for your copy of the movie (which comes out in stores on March 21, 2009), and an all-access pass to Hot Topic's midnight Twilight release party? That's right, guys. If you didn't already know this, $22.99 at Hot Topic gets you your movie, and gets you in on the fun. I've already got my invitation. Who knows? Maybe I'll see you there.

The most exciting part about the dvd release? Well, I don't know about you, but I love me some special features, and I can't wait to get my hands on that shiny disc full of bonus materials. Of course, you guys will probably hear all about that, too. Or maybe you'll be right along with me. It should be a pretty interesting night. I'll try and post pictures of the event when I get home if I can...

Crazy for Coraline?

February 12th 2009 18:56
I've just seen Coraline. This move, based on a book by Neil Gaiman and adapted into a screenplay by none other than Henry Selick, promised to be an awesome 3-D experience...and of course, those of us who are familiar with Selick's work (Nightmare Before Christmas, Monkeybone, and James and the Giant Peach, anyone?) were really looking forward to an awesome experience in the theater. Well folks, get your massive tubs of popcorn and candy and have a seat. This is one interesting ride.

Those of you who are familiar with Selick's work will be able to tell right away that he worked on the film. It has the same visual feel to it as Nightmare does, and with big names like Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher involved behind the scenes, Coraline definitely holds a lot of promise. Something you'll notice pretty quickly? Mommies? As far as Fanning's work goes, this movie is no Charlotte's Web. I wouldn't exactly be the first in line to take my little one to see this. It's definitely not something I would recommend if you have very young kids.

The storyline follows a young girl named Coraline Jones (Fanning) who finds a door in her new home that leads to an alternate dimension of sorts--and an alternate version of her life, complete with 'new' parents, neighbors, and friends. Every kid's dream, right? On the surface, the other world (complete with Other Mother, and Other Father) is great...Coraline seems to have everything there that she doesn't have in her real home. But when things go from strange to downright dangerous, it's up to Coraline to save everyone...including herself.

All in all, it was a pretty great movie, made even better thanks to some stunning 3-D scenes, and well worth the 8.50 to see it and the popcorn grease stains that will inevitably litter your jeans by the end of the show.

Pros: stunning 3-D scenes, excellent animation, stellar cast...everything you'd expect from a Selick film.

Cons: Not for the kiddies, and not quite as visually stunning in 2-D. If you're going to spend your money, try to see the 3D version in your theater.
