Me and My Shadow
December 11th 2006 04:18
Over the weekend, against my better judgement, I decided to be active and play sport. It was a mistake on several levels. Firstly, I prefer to sleep off my hangovers on the weekend, like a normal person. Secondly, it was a sport which centred around a hard ball moving very fast. And, thirdly, I am a lady - and ladies do not sweat. We may, from time to time, gently perspire, but that's about it.
I was glad to get home. I'm not sure who won the game, but if there was a prize for the most hungover, bruised and sunburnt person, then I would have taken home a trophy. I am still feeling some of the effects today, which made me think two things. 1). I am old. 2). The sun hates me.
If you are an Australian then you are probably familar with the 'Slip, Slop, Slap' campaign of the 1980's, aimed at encouraging people to slip on a hat, slop on some sunscreen and slap on a hat.
Sid the seagull was on the TV all the time, warning us to avoid sun damage... I'm pretty sure he had some kind of speech impediment - that's how 1980's it was, they gave Sid the Seagull a lisp.
The adds were played during cartoons and even though I probably wanted Astro Boy to come back on, I remember paying attention.
So, on the weekend I had on a hat, and sunscreen, and sunglasses, and usually a shirt - still I got sunburnt. Thanks fair complexion!
What's the answer? Stay indoors? Well, then I'm prone to a vitamin D deficiency and we all know where that leads... yes, rickets! So, do I take the pain and apply a litre of aloe vera to my face and arms each week, or do I become a pale grey colour and walk around with bendy leg bones? ... It seems I have some thinking to do.

What's the answer? Well Oscar Wilde said, 'All things in moderation, especially moderation...'

Playing sport, perish the notion.
No sun, osteoporosis as well.
10 minutes a day is all that is required not a month's supply all in one go. Your big error, of course, was to play sport, indoor swimming being the exception.
Cheer up, slip, slop and slap, to the right degree, and give up the alcohol. You'll be right, babe.
Oops, sorry, m'selle or Madam or madame, whatever, as you say ,ladies do not sweat.

What a great post, I can definitely relate to it. I'm not one for strenuous exercise at all. I sweat too much, go red and I'm very uncoordinated. But at least you tried...I haven't for ages, walking is my exercise and I'm very satisfied with that and so is my pooch.

I agree, what is the fascination with running after balls in the name of sport? And golf....well, what's that about? There's not even an adrenalin rush...

Lauren D, is there anything that has ever been said that Oscar Wilde didn't say better? I don't think so.
Hi Katyzzz, I have been slipping, slopping and slapping over the festive season, as per your suggestion
Hello Tracy. Good call - dog walking is the business
Hi Hope, you're right - exercise is a good thing, as long as you don't get hurt in the process. Jumping castles are soft... that might be the next step.
Hahah! Kylar
And, Tracey... I think there's adrenaline when you score a goal. Or when you celebrate the goal by running around topless. One of those.
Took me a while to respond, eh? Sorry about that. Limited internet connection, over Christmas.
