Matildas steal a dramatic win

March 6th 2010 14:52
Today's international women's friendly between Australia and DPR Korea was anything but a friendly game with the game turning into a drama when the Koreans were penalised with a penalty before half time saw them all walk from the field and remain there for at least 4 minutes before they finally got back onto the pitch and allowed Katie Gill to take and score the penalty, she took the penalty before the Koreans came back onto the pitch but it was disallowed and we were allowed to start again.

But before that Sarah Walsh in the 25th minute started the scoring for the game, giving Australia a 1-nil lead but eight minutes later Yun Mi Jo equalised but then the drama happened a penalty was awarded and then it was converted in injury time by Katie Gill giving Australia a 2-1 lead into the break. The penalty caused the Koreans to leave the field angry, the 5th ranked side grabbed drinks and would not listen to the referee before finally going back on.

After the break the visitors managed to bounce back thanks to a strike from yong Hui Kim after 54 minutes, the game was heading towards another 2-2 draw, as the two sides managed this midweek, and with the Asian Cup coming up both sides were looking for a nice leg up.

But the Matildas didn't give up, they kept on pressing for a winning goal, but as did the Koreans who didn't want to leave without a win, but Kyah simon battled tight Korean defence to beat the goalkeeper Myong Hui Hong for a lat game winner that sent the small crowd on a miserable Brisbane day a frenzy and after about 30 or so seconds the final whistle went, Australia breaking the Korean hoodoo winning 3-2 and going into the Asian Cup next month with a huge lift even though they are not playing DRP Korea in their group they do have a tough time coming up.

The Matildas are in group B facing China P.R., Vietnam, and Korea Republic, in their first game on May 19th they will be facing Vietnam. Following that they will be facing Korea on May 21, and finally they are facing China on May 23 the top 3 teams from this group will qualify for the finals.

But back onto this game today, a very good performance by both sides, apart from a couple of defensive errors by the Matildas, one of which lead to their second goal of the game. The Koreans also missed a handball which could have sent the Australian fans home disappointed with another draw against this side, so soon after they did midweek. Clearly you could see that DPR Korea were ranked above the Australians, but they didn't allow this to prevent them from going in hard, the Koreans had a lot of early shots on goal in the 2nd, finally causing the error that made the 2nd goal of the game for them.

But they were also caught napping late in the game, and were punished for this, and walked away without a win here. Exciting game of football despite the very long period between scoring shots, and scores. Both sides didn't leave anything out there, and now can focus on their Asian Cup campaigns.

I am disappointed by the Koreans walking from the pitch, I found that to be a disrespectful, unsportsman like performance, yes, there was a dispute for the penalty, but to crack the sads and leave the pitch, which they have been known for, according to the commentary, it just made that 3rd Australian goal even sweeter because you didn't want to see them walk away with a draw.
