Match Box 20? No Just Rob Thomas

When the lead singer of a band decides to go out on their own often the sound of the new project sounds very similar. The biggest reason is the vocals. You can change bands but you cant change how you sound. Well, Rob Thomas took this one step further than I have seen. He performed songs from his first solo album mixed with some Match Box20 top hits and a few never released tracks that he thought should have been. He also performed a few 80s songs to fill out his set list.
Me and a friend (Amy) got to Blossom Music Center by 6:30 pm. I almost always run early. We went to find our initial seats in the Pavilion. About the same place I will be sitting (at first) for the NIN concert June 27. Next we took a little walk to get something to drink and a souvenir. The gear for the show wasnt too expensive really. The first performer we saw was a bubble gum pop same as most girl looking to be in her teens names Jamie. She was pretty much singing nasal the whole time. The funny thing is she either heard us or she knew what she was doing was a bit irritating. She was probably just nervous. This happened at the second stage so we were standing pretty close. A comment was made that she was playing with her hair to much. After finishing her song she said something like, Im sorry Im playing with my hair so much and its irritating.
We headed to the main stage before her set over. When Jewel came on she told everyone to move down since people couldnt show up on time. She joked their tickets must have said a different time. Her voice sounded excellent and she told some funny stories too. For instance when she was 18 her and her Catholic boyfriend (which means he looks for bad things to do) went to Mexico and ended up in the middle of a drug bust by sea. Her and her boyfriend helped in the bust the officers offered her boyfriend some of the contraband and said her could take more than he initially did. She gave a website a dress with pictures the officers let them take. I guess the guy still has the pictures on his website. I didnt write it down
We moved up quite a bit and more toward the center of the pavilion. We got much better seats. But before Rob performed the original people that were in the seats we sat in were bumped off the floor back to their seats. We headed down closer and a staff member asked if we were just headed out that way and of course I said, yes. We sat in some empty seats over to their right side and up a level. Still better than our original seats.
Rob started with This is how a heart breaks. A very energetic start. He then told the crowd the set would be a good mix to entertain everyone. And started singing a Match Box20 song. He performed a few acoustic versions of songs heard on the radio maybe one to many times. But his 80s revival songs were the funniest. He performed Talking Heads Burning Down the House with a fire motif imposed on the background. To funny. Later he performed the David Bowie song my Dad considers the downfall or end of Bowies career, Lets Dance. He also invited Jewel onstage to perform one of my favorite Stevie Nicks songs, Stop dragging my heart around that Nicks performs with Tom Petty. B
