A beginner's guide to aerodynamics:

The F1 cars go very quickly at Monza. Apparently, this is because of something called aerodynamics. Here is a handy guide to a mysterious subject…

AERO package - The wrapping on a chocolate bar called "Aero." If your car looks like a bar of chocolate, it probably won't go very quickly

Rear wing - When very old F1 drivers go to heaven they wear these on their back to get around quicker than normal people

Gurney Flap - Named after American F1 driver Dan Gurney who competed in 86 Grands Prix, winning 4 of them. The first man to win a GP driving a car he built himself (the Eagle-Climax.) He got upset about tools dropping on his head when working on the gearbox of his car, so put a small flap on the rear wing to stop the tools rolling off the edge of the wing

Wind Tunnel model - A fashion term for girls who like to be photographed with their hair blowing backwards

Fifty Percent Wind Tunnel Model - As above but with a very bad contract that means the modelling agency takes half her money

Turning Vain (sometimes spelt Vane) - What happens to a wind tunnel model if you say too many nice things about her

Aerodynamicist - a difficult word to say

Front End Plate - the plate most likely to fall off the edge of the table

Drag - the way time passes slowly for the crowd watching a long procession of cars supposedly racing

Drag coefficient Cd - very boring music that drivers listen to when going down the main straight at Monza

Down Force - Police Force who work on the South Downs near the coast of England

High Down Force - The same Police Force after they have burnt illegal marijuana plants

Low Down Force - How the Down Force feels the day after inhaling the marijuana smoke

Winglets - Baby wings

Lift - What lazy aerodynamicists use to go to their office rather than walking up stairs

Deflector - Word to describe an aerodynamicist when he no longer wants to work for a team and moves to another one

Monza Testing Report: Williams, Day 4

September 4th 2007 13:23
The team have concluded a four day test session at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy today. Originally scheduled as a three day test, nine of the eleven teams opted to stay on for an additional day today due to the poor weather conditions which have severely hindered much of the week’s running.

The extra day didn’t deliver any drier conditions though as the rain continued to fall throughout much of the morning forcing the teams to stay behind garage doors. Fortunately, the sun made an appearance towards lunchtime allowing the drivers some valuable track time this afternoon.

Nico Rosberg remained on duty for AT&T Williams and spent the little running time he had finishing off preparation work for the Italian GP. Nico set the fourth quickest time of 1:23.962 and completed 94 laps bringing the team’s weekly total to 308 (just under 1,800kms).

Dickie Stanford, Test Team Manager, Williams F1:
"The rain affected our programme again today with the circuit only really drying out late morning. Despite the limited track time, we managed to work our way through all the set-up preparations we needed to for the Monza race. Thanks to the guys who have all done a really good job this week, particularly considering the poor weather."

Monza Testing Report: Williams, Day 3

September 4th 2007 13:22
Nico Rosberg turned up for testing duties today only to be met by an inch of rain water on track.

Following heavy rain overnight, the deluge continued well into the morning, eating into everyone's valuable track time at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza today.

The waters finally cleared over lunch, allowing the teams a two hour window of track time this afternoon but not enough time for the majority to complete their planned programmes. As such, most of the eleven teams have extended their stay and will return to the circuit tomorrow for hopefully a dry day of running.

Nico managed to bank 45 laps today while working through set-up options for the Italian Grand Prix next weekend and recorded the 7th quickest time of the session with a 1:24.984.

Dickie Stanford, Test Team Manager, Williams F1:
"After a very heavy downpour which lasted for about two and a half hours this morning, the weather cleared at lunchtime leaving blue skies and temperatures reaching 25°C. During the limited window of running the weather afforded us, we continued with our set-up work prior to the race here with Nico in the car. Due to the poor weather conditions, we’ll be staying another day with the majority of the other teams in order to finish our programme."

Italian GP Preview: Williams

September 4th 2007 13:17
After Istanbul’s contemporary Otodrom, Formula One turns full circle this weekend to visit one of the more traditional tracks on the calendar, Monza. Nestled in Italy’s Lombardy region just half an hour from fashion capital, Milan, the Autodromo boasts an enviable racing heritage having hosted more F1 races than any other race track and all but one Italian Grand Prix since the sport’s inception in 1950.

Over its 30 years, Williams has won one in five Italian Grand Prix, set one in three fastest laps and still holds the record for the fastest ever average lap speed on Monza’s hallowed asphalt with Montoya’s 2004 qualifying lap. Sunday’s race, round 13 of the Championship and GP number 57 for Monza, is the penultimate of the European season and with just five rounds left, the team’s ambition will be to bag as many points as possible in order to remain ahead of its keenest rivals in the Constructors’ Championship

Monza Testing Report: Honda

September 4th 2007 13:15
The Honda Racing F1 Team completed a four-day test at the Monza circuit in northern Italy today in preparation for the Italian Grand Prix at the historic racing venue next weekend. This week's programme concentrated on establishing a good set-up for the RA107 car around the unique high-speed and low-downforce track, through the evaluation of various aerodynamic, tyre and chassis set-up options.

Rubens Barrichello began the test programme on Tuesday focusing on the set-up of the car, alongside working through aerodynamic and suspension evaluations. Rubens' running was briefly interrupted by a late afternoon rain shower, although he was able to complete a good number of laps over the day, 85 in total
