Latest Marvel News

Marvel had their retailer summit yesterday, and it was accompanied by an avalanche of news and announcements - some welcome, some not so.

Nova gets an ongoing! OK, so Nova is getting his own title spinning out of the recent Annihilation event. It's being written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. They wrote his miniseries in Annihilation, and that was pretty good, so it seems like this Nova series might have legs. The character has never really taken off as a solo star - he's had two ongoings, and both were cancelled in short order. Annihilation may have given him enough buzz to generate some sales. Anyway, it's good to see Marvel's cosmic characters getting some love.

Spider-Man Family! Sean McKeever's writing a bi-monthly Spidey title, featuring one-shot stories set during Spidey's past. A couple have already been released, and they've been fun so far. As loathe as I am to see Spider-Man get even more titles, this one should be good fun.

The Loners? Readers of Runaways will remember a bunch of teen heroes who showed up as a superhero support group, helping each other adjust to normal lives. Those guys are getting their own title (it sounds like an ongoing) written by C.B. Cebulski. The team features Julie Power of Power Pack, Ricochet, Turbo, Darkhawk, and the Phil Urich Green Goblin. Most of those names mean nothing to me, and I only know Cebulski from the godawful Marvel Manga stuff. Doesn't sound intriguing.

Dabel Bros. join Marvel. Dabel Bros. is a company that has been turning out subpar adaptations of classic (and not-so-classic) fantasy novels. Now they can continue churning out their subpar adaptations with Marvel's backing. Joy.

JMS on Thor! Thor returns in an ongoing, after a long hiatus, with Joe Michael Straczynski at the helm. The decision to rest Thor for a while has been a good one - the character had grown stale. It sounds like JMS is taking a back-to-basics approach with the character, which I appreciate, returning him to the Don Blake persona. But, it's JMS... I haven't liked any of his Marvel work. I've especially disliked the things he's done to Spider-Man. He's undoubtedly a talented writer, but his vision and mine rarely synch up.

Whedon on Runaways! How do you get the sales up on a low-selling but critically acclaimed title? Get Buffy-creator Joss Whedon to write it! This is a smart play. Whedon obviously loves the title, and this will probably make it a top ten book. I'm honestly not a huge fan - there's something about teen superhero books that turn me right off - but Marvel can only win from this decision.

Alan Davis exclusive! Huzzah! The best penciller in the industry who's capable of a monthly schedule is at Marvel for the foreseeable future, and he's relaunching ClanDestine, his cult hit from the mid-90s. I've never read Clan Destine, but I love Davis as a penciller and a writer. Hopefully this means Marvel will be putting out a collection in the near future.

Marvel does classic novels. Meh. Marvel adapting classic novels interests me not. I'm of the opinion that if you want to read a classic novel, read the novel. An adaptation will never be as good.

Crossover with Guiding Light?!? Apparently, Guiding Light is the longest-running soap opera in the world, having started in the 1930s as a radio show and moved to TV later. Marvel are doing a corssover where their superheroes interact with the show. Weird. I've never seen the show, nor do I plan to. Sounds very, very odd.

Back in Black! Spidey returns to his classic costume soon - but the black costume? Cool - I've always like it, though I prefer the old red and blue. It sounds like there may be a different character under the mask though. Could this be a way to get Marvel out of revealing Spidey's identity? Hopefully not this soon.

World War Hulk! This is the big event for next year, though apparently it won't be anywhere near the scale of Civil War. It's being written by Greg Pak, and presumably it will feature the Hulk's return to Earth to crack the heads of the heroes who sent him out into space. This sounds fun.

Well, that's as big a news day as I've seen in comics. I'm especially looking forward to World War Hulk, and it's good to see Marvel trying some new things. For the full stories, head over to Newsarama.
