Offline Blogging Tool?

December 19th 2006 15:00
I'd like to be able to post to my Orble blog with an offline composition tool like Ecto. I already use this very successfully with my WordPress-based blogs. How can I set this up for use with Orble? Anyone know?

About this Blog

December 18th 2006 12:40
Greetings! Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Maria Langer and I'm a freelance writer and commercial helicopter pilot living in Arizona. I write mostly about computers -- I've written more than 60 how-to books and hundreds of articles. I also maintain a personal blog, with a hodgepodge of information, stories, and articles.

I've started this blog to share some photos and short stories of my experiences traveling throughout the United States. As you'll see, I get around quite a bit and I always have my little digital camera on hand. Most of the photos are the ones that appear in my personal blog's header, but as I continue to write, I'll be showing off some new photos -- and perhaps a few videos -- too.

I hope you'll check in regularly to see where I've been.

on Should Bloggers have a Code of Ethics?

December 29th 2006 14:55
As a professional writer (someone who writes for a living) and the owner of two other blogs (both of which are self-hosted and have gotten me into hot water over the years), free speech is extremely important to me.

Yet I agree that when you're blogging on someone else's server, you have to play by their rules. If you can't live with that, there is an alternative: start your own blog on your own server. Then you can say whatever you want -- and take the consequences directly.

I think everyone's blog postings should be ultimately governed by their own personal code of ethics. My code tells me not to spread lies or unsubstatiated rumors, not to bash other people without damn good reason, and not to write things that'll keep me up at night, making me wonder whether I should have made those thoughts public. In other words, not to write things I'd be ashamed of.

My blog here at Orble doesn't have any of what I call "Deep Thoughts," so I don't expect any censorship here. But my other blogs do include controversial ideas. People I've done business with -- including the government of the town I live in -- have attempted to censor me. But since everything I've posted passes my personal code of ethics, I have never removed or edited a post. It's caused me to lose business and it's made me a few enemies, but I can live with that. Many people respect me for sharing my ideas, even when some of them are obviously not very popular.

That's freedom of speech -- a two-edged sword.

I'm also interested in knowing whether Orble warns bloggers about content problems before taking down their sites.

I don't expect any problems with my blog here, but as a professional writer based in the U.S. (where free speech is supposedly guaranteed by our Constitution's Bill of Rights), I always have concerns about censorship.

on Anybody tracking their blog url through adsense channel ?

December 29th 2006 14:23
Channels, in this sense, are URLs for domain names (or pages, if you like). You specify a URL (like your Orble domain name) as a channel. Google can then create reports that show hits and revenue by channel.

I've set it up with a URL channel for each of the domains on which I use AdSense. I can then see which domains (channels) are making money.

On the Adsense site, go to AdSense setup and click the URL Channels link. Click Add New URL Channels. Then enter the URL for the site or directory or page you want to track. Normally, this will be your Orble blog domain name. Click Add Channels to add the URL to the list.

That should get you started. Good luck.

I didn't do a thing and it's bigger already. Thanks! I can read it!

I used to fly over the Grand Canyon for one of the tour operators there. I can't do it anymore -- I need a special permit I can't get. So I fly around pretty much the rest of the state. Lake Powell is pretty cool and a cruise up the Colorado River from Lake Havasu to Laughlin, low-level is kick-butt.

You show up in Wickenburg and that can be arranged.

Thanks very much. I sure do appreciate that.

Also, is there any way to increase the font size of the comments on posts? They're tiny on my computer (a Mac running Firefox) and the gray color makes them even tougher to read. I don't want to fiddle with the font size in Firefox prefs, because I don't want to change all pages I view. Can you help? Thanks.
