The Mulligans got off to a solid start in this week’s Friday night game as the intense Cats tore apart a shell-shocked Bulldogs. The Cats extended their winning-streak to 11, ruthlessly smashing the Bulldogs in the first half to run out 75 point winners 20.18 (138) to 9.9 (63) at Telstra Dome.

Brownlow favourite and confirmed Dreamteam GUN, GARY ABLETT JNR, continued his scintillating form to run rampant with 35 disposals and 130 Dreamteam points. I have had Gary Ablett Jnr in my Dreamteam the last 2 years, but lost patience with him this year. Needlessly to say, I cringe when he dominates as he did last night. His work ethic has improved so much this year. We can only hope he has a couple of bad games before the end of the year so his 2008 price isn’t unaffordable. A few of the coaches at the top of The Hardnuts league have GOD JNR, so here’s to hoping The Mulligans can keep him quiet in the DT finals.

Despite a preference for 2-point disposals, new gun Mulligans recruit JIMMY BARTEL racked up a very solid 117. He’ll drop a further $3,500 this week, so I’d expect some more coaches to jump on him before the next lockout, however The Mulligans coach is delighted to have Jimmy’s 117 in the cupboard, with the OP cloud hanging over his predecessor. I am assuming that the Bashers have held onto CHRIS JUDD this week, with Clarke to cover if he misses.

The only sour note for The Mulligans last night was the injury of LINDSAY GILBEE (34), which may be balanced by the similar misfortune which befell WOJCINSKI, who scored a paltry 8 points before retiring to the pine with his knee strapped. I must hope coach of The Bashers either put Wojcinski into the 22 ahead of MARTIN CLARKE, or that Judd is a late withdrawal (in order for Wojcinski’s 8 to count).

Discussion boards have been littered with disgruntled coaches crying of having to “carry” Gilbee over the past few weeks. I expect those that offloaded him this week will be clicking their heels today. Many more will be inconvenienced by Gilbee’s injury, including my Hardnuts opponents over the next 2 weeks, so I may nurse him through to the finals and cover him with JW SMITH in the meantime.

R16 GEE Vs WBD DREATEAM OVER 90’S

Joel Corey 120
Joel Selwood 118

Jimmy Bartel 117

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Tom Williams 100
Matthew Boyd 97
Scott West 95
Daniel Giansiracusa 93
Brad Johnson 93
Nathan Eagleton 90

POINTS OF NOTE:

LINDSAY GILBEE (34) INJURED! Lindsay will shed about $21k this week, vindicating the coaches who dropped him in the past couple of weeks. He will miss at least three weeks with a torn left calf muscle.

TOM WILLIAMS (100). Plenty of tackling and marks saw Tom Williams crack his second ton in the past 6 weeks. He will rise approx $27k. Not bad, as last night was only his seventh game. One to keep in mind for ’08, if you don’t have him now.

ANDREJS EVERITT (77). Spida Jnr got plenty of it across half-back in his third game and looks to be another ready made playing back emergency for DT coaches that have him. Being his “burst” game (the third game for the season, when the first price change occurs), the $82,300 rookie will shoot up about $40k this week with another negative break-even for Round 16.

CAMERON MOONEY (82). Another player I vowed “never again” seems to have gotten his act together. Looked set for an enormous night with four straight goals in the first half, before spending a lot of the second half getting work on a sore hamstring. My league opponent this week (The Bashers) had him, so was happy to see him keep a lid on it!

SCOTT WEST (95). The DT legend will drop approx $20k this week, bringing him down to about $308,000. Was his usual prolific self and will be getting eyed by coaches everywhere. I won’t be touching him this week, seeing how he grimaced with pain when kicking last night. Very cheap for a guy of his calibre, and will come down even more, but there is a suitable risk attached. Be warned. You’d want enough spare trades in case he gets injured, rested or misses games in the vicinity of Rounds 20-22.

AKERMANIS (60). My league opponent this week has him, so I was rapt to see him kept goalless and give away a few free kicks.

OTTENS (61). Thrashed Darcy in the ruck but missed a couple of goals. Bashers & Mulligans both have him, so happy for him to have quieter weeks when he has no bearing on the outcome of my league match.

JARROD HARBROW (66). One of few bright spots on a dark night for the Dogs.

TOM HAWKINS (29).
Missed a couple of shots at goal, but is showing enough to suggest he’ll rack a big score or two before the end of the season… if he can keep getting a game with this mob!

MITCH HAHN (45) – INJURED! Will have surgery today on his right shoulder, ruling him out for at least 5 weeks and effectively ending his Dreamteam season.

DALE MORRIS - INJURED! Was a late withdrawal with back spasms.

ADAM COONEY (41) REPORTED! Topped of a dirty night when he was reported for striking the ginger glove (Cameron Ling) in an off-the-ball incident during the third quarter. Another Ling scalp after a 31 disposals the week before. Forget the Sydney factor... What about the Ling factor?!

R16 HARDNUTS LEAGUE MATCH Vs THE BASHERS
The Bashers and The Mulligans share Chad Cornes, Dustin Fletcher, Heath Shaw, Nigel Lappin, Brad Johnson (93), Paul Chapman (117), Brad Ottens (61), Jed Adcock, Scott Pendlebury & Lance Franklin. I have Chad Cornes as Captain. Bashers had Lappin last week and Lockyer the week before. Bashers is a one-eyed Magpie supporter, so think he may have gone back to Lockyer against the Bombers this week.

That leaves the league match equations this week as follows:

BASHERS vs MULLIGANS

BACKS
LOCKYER vs McPHEE
McCLEOD vs KOSCHITZKE
NEWMAN vs GILBEE (34)

CENTRES
SWAN vs BARTEL (117)
JUDD vs SCOTLAND
KERR vs FOLEY
WOJCINSKI (8) or CLARKE vs MURPHY

RUCKS
FRASER vs COX
MOONEY vs EVERITT

FWDS
PAVLICH vs RIEWOLDT
AKERMANIS vs LLOYD
NATHAN BROWN vs LUCAS

The Mulligans notched their highest ever Dreamteam score this week (2194), winning their Hardnuts League match against The Champs. Having won five of their last six league matches, The Mulligans now jump into 7th position, just shaded by The Bangers and The Champs in percentage, whilst 2nd spot is only a game and the same couple of percentage points ahead.

This week, The Mulligans line up against last years Division 2 premiers, The Bashers, currently sitting at 8th. The Bashers lost with a very respectable 2028 last week, so will be keen to atone. This is a critical match for both teams, with four teams only four points behind, each with slightly healthier percentages than our own.

The Mulligans Dreamteam 2007

Both The Mulligans and The Bashers welcome back Dustin Fletcher from suspension, although The Mulligans had cover through JW Smith, while the Bashers coughed up a donut last round for his indiscretion the previous week. The Bashers will also be strengthened by the return of Daniel Kerr. Our teams currently share over 10 players, including Chris Judd. We both have cover in Clarke but, I reckon it’s time to to offload the great man.

Premium Midfield Options - Round 16

When the Mulligans squad was selected at the beginning of the season, I deliberately got a crop off emerging midfielders who were ready to take the next step. It was always the intention of the Mulligans coaching panel to upgrade some of these players to proven DT guns before the finals.

Ben McGlynn made way for Heath Scotland 3 rounds ago. (I traded out Andrew Walker for Heath Shaw the same week, forever to be known The Week of Heaths). If I’d postponed the Scotland trade until now, I’d have saved $60k and scored an average of an extra 24 points over the last 3 rounds… but that’s the way it goes. I am also looking to upgrade another of my midfielders (Foley, Pendlebury or Murphy) in the lead-up to the finals, however I have more pressing concerns this week.

Chris Judd is the most popular Dreamteam player in the competition. Last weekend, he looked a shadow of the champion footballer and dreamteamer that we know he is a capable of being. The loss of his blistering speed, a preference to handball plus increasing time out of the engine room and on the pine are sounding alarm bells for Dreamteam coaches everywhere. He’s been named this week, but it looks ominous. It can only be a matter of time before he’s rested, or worse. If they rested him now, I’d probably hang onto him for a few weeks, but a week or two of scores like last week, and his price drop will render him worthless.

The agony of late withdrawals can almost be enough to push some Dreamteam coaches over the edge, so this Dreamteam coach is gonna use one of his final five trades to hopefully avoid such stresses as we approach the finals. There’s a plethora of quality midfielders at prices that make it difficult to save those precious trades, so I expect I’ll be one of many coaches looking to offload Judd in the next week or two.

The Mulligans current midfield:
Scotland $310,800
Pendlebury $305,200
Foley $301,800
Judd $330,800
Murphy $305,800
Lappin $390,400

5 trades $76,300 coffers Judd ($330,800) = $407,100

JIMMY BARTEL has been THE Dreamteam sensation of 2007. He’s only now on the menu for most Dreamteam coaches who haven’t had him from the start due to the heavy knock he took (along with a 43) a few rounds ago. He’s not back to his best since, but had his skull opened up again last week, and still managed 87. Rumors that he may be carrying a groin are the only concern. Until 3 weeks ago, you’d have traded Brad Johnson to get him into your team. Still hard to go past him now, and should be even better value next week, if you can wait. Currently $38,500 under his “real” value. A go-to skipper that can be relied upon every week.

Proven GUN DT’er, attractively priced for his potential. I have his brother, who is always solid, but Kane has had some quiet DT games where he’s been used as a stopper, with great success for the Power. I expect he might get more negating roles, so probably consider him a greater risk at this point.

Good run home with all remaining games being played in Melbourne. Very solid recent form Vs ADE (R22), but SYD (R21) & MEL (R20) form below average. Overpriced for mine, especially for a Collingwood player. I get itchy just thinking about it!

LENNY HAYES has been very good since returning from injury. Showing no signs of it hampering him and is a proven Dreamteam GUN. Notched 146 last week so in sensational DT form. Brilliant recent record Vs WCE (R21) & solid Vs RIC (R22). Nobody in my league has him, so makes him more attractive.

Legendary DT’er SCOTT WEST just keeps on racking them up. Lots of games at the Dome in the run home. Recent form Vs KAN (R22) way below par. Expect to drop further in price this week. Might be an irresistible bargain in a week or two. Coming back from groin injury so probably best to wait and see anyway. Not this week for me.

The Mulligans

July 16th 2007 11:41
Alison, my Scottish girlfriend, has become quite a fanatical Australian Rules follower in her 5 years in Melbourne, but especially since we met, a couple of years ago. When asked by a work colleague last season which team she followed, she replied “The Mulligans”.

Never heard of The Mulligans? Don’t know their team colours? Their home ground? Their League? Their coach? Let me introduce myself, Marcus, coach of The Mulligans, which consists of 30 AFL players I have recruited to form my AFL Dreamteam side, currently competing in Division 1 of the Hardnuts League.

The Hardnuts added a second division a couple of years ago to accomodate demand. It also serves to maintain the quality of its Premier league, with the bottom two teams from Division 1 being relegated and the two finalist from the Magoos (Two’s/Division 2) stepping-up to the “big time” the following year. It is extremely competitive and carries enormous bragging rights, as well as a handy cash prize.

Here, I will share my adventure of the season - the thinking behind my strategies, trades and captain choices each week. Join me on my Dreamteam ride through the agony and ecstasy, the humiliation and the glory of being a Dreamteam coach.
