March 24 - Tibet and Democracy
April 1st 2008 02:24
The supposed "Uprising" in Tibet recently is an annual occurrence which conincides with the May 10 anniversary of the uprisings in 1959. This year will be different. With the Olympic Games fast approaching the Tibetans must surely be motivated to continue their demonstrations and focus the attention of the world's media on their province.
Australia recognises China's sovereignty over the region, a fact that Prime Minister Rudd suggested was never in question. However with the French President Nicolas Sarkozy calling for all French athletes to boycott the opening ceremony as a protest against China's human rights record, all the nations competing in the Olympics will have their associations with Chine called into question over the coming months.
The Tibetan "Rebels" will no doubt be pushing their case for independence hard right up until the closing ceremony, but their case is hopeless. China cannot afford to set a precedent whereby they would conceed sovereignty over a region. so the international community might well be advised to focus their attentions on the Dafur region of the Sudan if they really want to tackle the human rights issue.
