Wooly Bully

May 6th 2012 23:32
Hey everyone,

This is not related in any way to the theme of this blog. There will be no mention of music, up and coming artists, the latest underground band that's doing things differently or about my never ending quest for new material.

This is a rather serious post about something that I've had the unfortunate opportunity to experience myself. In Canada within our educational institutions there has been an important focus these last few years on the prevention of Bullying.

The impact of bullying on young kids is more than profound. It can lead to psychological problems, health problems, low self esteem, personality disorders and in some cases even suicide.

There are many strong campaigns being led to prevent this type of behaviour at many levels. It's encouraging to see that this topic is being integrated into the curiculum and victims of this behaviour and those that are witness to this behaviour are learning to recognize the signs and more importantly they are speaking out.

In many cases the person doing the bullying is suffering from abuse as well and this often leads to them becoming bullies.

The truth is that this behaviour is not limited to our schools and it is not limited to students. Bullying in the workplace is now taking up more and more space in the media. it's not that there has been an increase in this behaviour amongst adults, it is because people have become more aware that this behaviour is simply unacceptable.

It took me five years to realize what was happening and to finally do something about it. I was the first to speak out and when i did I found out that i was not only helping myself but many others who we're suffering the same way i was...... in silence.

I will leave you with a list of 15 signs of bullying in the workplace. If you recognize that any of these things ar happening to you please do something about it. Speak up, go to your union, go to your human resources department and file a complaint. Trust me, you will thank me for it!!

Fifteen signs of workplace bullying

Continually undervaluing effort. Recognition of effort is an important motivator for every employee. Without it, people tend to decrease effort, have little desire to be in to work on time, or perform their work to the best of their ability. By undervaluing an employee’s efforts, an exceptional employee can quickly become a problem employee.

Refusing to delegate. Delegation is a tool for getting more done in less time and for developing employees. When an employee is not given the opportunity to develop, they will certainly look for the opportunity elsewhere.

Frequently changing workplace rules. When the playing field is ever changing, how can the players play the game effectively? Changing the workplace guidelines on a regular basis sets employees up for failure, "keeps them on egg shells" because they never know what the "rules of the day" are. It also undermines trust amongst co-workers.

Public humiliation. Reprimanding an employee in a meeting or in the presence of other employees, yelling at or swearing at an employee, or rolling of the eyes when an employee or co-worker is expressing an opinion are all examples of humiliation.

Personal insults and name-calling. Whether in the presence of the individual or behind the individual’s back, this tends to alienate and lends to the forming of camps, further dividing your workforce.

Over-monitoring with malicious intent. Micromanaging with the intent of finding problems undermines the ability of an individual to do their job and do it well. Over time this approach can increase the mistakes a person makes. Micromanaging can make someone feel as though their every move is being monitored and judged. It can make them nervous and take their mind off of their work, increasing stress levels and developing into health issues.

Unfair applications of leave or promotion. This occurs when the rules for promotion are not applied consistently among the staff, when some have flexibility in scheduling, or some have the freedom to come and go as they please and others do not. When one individual is singled out and the rules of the workplace are not applied consistently it constitutes as bullying. This behaviour undermines trust, decreases motivation, and creates a negative attitude toward the supervisor and the organization. This will be reflected in the quality of work of the individual if the individual does not leave the organization first.

Instigating complaints from others to make an individual appear incompetent. Not all staff complaints are genuine issues. The challenge for the supervisor is defining the difference. A well versed bully is able to manipulate others into believing that the person being bullied is incompetent and will manipulate others into joining their camp in ostracizing the one being bullied by filing complaints that are unfounded.

Constant criticism. Feedback, whether positive or negative, is a useful tool for improvement, however some mistake criticism for feedback. Regular criticism that is judgemental in nature is destructive to the individual receiving it, undermines self confidence, impacts the spirit of the individual, and instils a sense of incompetence.

Spreading malicious rumours, gossip, or innuendo. Hard to catch, yet extremely destructive to the workplace, rumours are hurtful and demeaning; they pit staff against one another and undermine the ability to work as a team.

Ignoring or excluding. The act of ostracizing someone in the workplace has the same effect as exiting someone from the community. Shunning creates a loss of identity and belonging. Every employee needs to feel a sense of belonging. One of the reasons people work is to experience a connection to others, as a sense of purpose is required for each individual to feel whole as a person.

Withholding information. When information is required to do a job and the information is withheld, we are setting someone up for failure.

Intimidating a person. Intimidation comes in many forms, and all instil a sense of fear in the person being bullied, whether it be fear of losing one’s job, fear of humiliation, fear of being ostracized, or fear of reprimand. All of these forms of control constitute intimidation.

Removing areas of responsibility or promising projects and not following through. In particular when there is no reason or explanation. By taking away responsibility or not following through on a commitment to an employee, the employee looses trust, motivation and starts to question their own ability.

Deliberately sabotaging or impeding work performance. This can happen in many forms, by not giving information required to perform the job, by not providing adequate workspace to complete the job, not giving the authority required to complete the job etc. This sets the employee up for failure; the result is that the work fails, the individual fails, and the organization looks incompetent in the end.

Bullies choose their targets, timing, location, and approach carefully; they know the rules and how to break them. Left unaddressed a workplace bully can influence your rate of turnover, the general health of your workplace, the productivity of your staff, and poison the overall culture of your organization.
By establishing strict guidelines on workplace bullying and training your staff about the topic, you are able to minimize bullying behaviour and its consequences in your organization.

Discovering Gotye and Kimbra

March 12th 2012 19:02
Hello everyone,

As you might have noticed there are some big changes coming to The Feverr. There are some big shoes to fill but change is sometimes good and we will be going in a somewhat different direction. The focus will still be on music but we will be touching on some different subjects such as discovering new artists, acoustic guitars and reviews, tips for guitar players and many other interesting topics.

I find it difficult to concentrate on one specific topic so I will simply write about the things I love and I’m hoping that you will want to share and collaborate through your comments or by email.

My first question to all of you is what are your top 5 favourite artists/bands?

What sets them apart from the rest of the crowd? Please send me your thoughts on this and I will follow up in a future blog post.

I came across an interesting video on YouTube the other day. On first view I really liked the song but the way they perform it was quite interesting. Human creativity never ceases to amaze me. This song was performed by WOTE or (Walk off The Earth)

Listen on youtube here

I then discovered that this was just a cover so I did a little research using a few of the tools I mentioned in my previous post and it turns out that the original artist is a singer called Gotye. He’s a Australian-Belgian artist.

Here’s the Wikipedia Bio:

Wouter "Wally" De Backer (born 21 May 1980), also known professionally by his stage name Gotye, (pronounced Go-te-yae), is a Belgian-Australian[1] multi-instrumental musician and singer-songwriter. The name "Gotye" is derived from "Gaultier" (or "Gautier" or "Gauthier",) the French equivalent of "Wouter" ("Walter" in English.) Gotye's voice has been compared to Sting and Peter Gabriel.

He has released three studio albums independently and one album featuring remixes of tracks from his first two albums. De Backer is also one-third of Melbourne indie-pop trio The Basics, who have independently released three studio albums and numerous other titles since 2002

Have a look at the video for the original song:

You’ll notice that they feature another artist in that song named Kimbra. She seemed quite interesting so I listened to a few of her songs on GrooveShark and youtube and I think she has the potential to be the next big female artist out of Australia. Obviously that’s my personal opinion but have a listen for yourself.

Kimbra song

As you can see just by hearing a new song you can follow the trail and discover many new artists related to one song. I can now add WOTE, Gotye and Kimbra to the long list of artists that I have discovered. Some of you will like them and some of you won’t but in the end variety will always be the spice of life.

On a different subject, a reader asked me if i had any suggestions in terms of online guitar lessons. If you do a simple Google search it’s not hard to discover that there is a lot of crap out there. The best site I could find though really blows all the other ones out of the water.

I’ve been playing guitar for twenty years and I have to say that JamPlay is an incredible resource for new players and for experienced players. It’s really worth the small investment. Don’t purchase the yearly membership though.

Try it for one month and then you can sign up again when you feel ready for more lessons. JamPlay is very reasonable for 19.99$.

That’s all for now

My Quest for New Music

February 23rd 2012 19:10

My quest for new music started when I was just a kid. I have always been obsessed with finding something unique and different to listen to. I always loved the classics like the Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin but I wanted to be the first to be listening to the next greatest thing or just listening to amazing artists that no one had ever heard of before.

In my teenage years I would buy music magazines and read band reviews in local papers hoping to find that obscure new artist that would give me my fix for new music. This was a great strategy but it also cost me a lot of money in albums and tapes that only had those one hit wonders.

The internet began to solve all those problems but I would still spend countless hours downloading music and listening to literally hundreds of songs before discovering that diamond in the rough. Finding new music has always been extremely time consuming. Sometimes the search is part of the fun but wouldn't it be nice to spend less time searching and more time actually enjoying the music.

The advent of streaming music has solved many of these problems. I have through the years narrowed it down to a science and I'm going to share a few of my music finding techniques here.

One important factor is that you need to know what you are looking for??

If you are looking for new artists you need a starting point. What I like to do is begin with an artist or band that I really like and begin searching for similar artists. A great website to use in this situation is The last FM or http://www.last.fm/.

This is a UK based website that is an incredible resource for music. What I usually do is type in a Google search as follows. In this example I will use the band City and Color. I would type "bands like City and Color last FM". The result of this search will give you a page from this website with about 10-20 artist that are similar to City in Color. They even rate the level of similarity.

Try doing the same search with one of your preferred bands or musicians.

The site gives you a description of the artist and the choice of listening to some of their releases. If you are more of a visual person there are some cool sites that will show you artists and their similarities.

TuneGlue is straightforward and easy to use.

Put in the name of a musical artist you like in the search bar and you’ll have a whole web of musical artists that are in one way or another, similar to the band you started with.

Another alternative to TuneGlue is Music-Map. Music-Map reveals all the similar artists in their database, with the most similar musicians closest to the original search term.

Music Roamer is also a great alternative that gives you pictures of the artists and also the ability to listen to songs directly from the site.

If all you want to do is listen to streaming music from almost any artist you can think of then I would highly recommend GrooveShark. This is one of my favorite sites and I no longer download music since discovering this amazing resource.

Have fun in your Music searching adventures.

The best italian appetizer of all time!

February 14th 2012 15:55
To me, this is the ultimate Italian appetizer. When I think of Italian food, I think of tomatoes, olive oil and garlic. The fact that it is an authentic dish served in little Italian villages makes it even better.

There's something about simple authentic food that makes me feel like I am experiencing a little piece of their culture right in my own home

I grew up listening to the classics. Led Zeppelin, The stones, The beetles, The Who etc... The first record I ever listened to was a 45 LP of Paul Simon singing love me like a rock. I think I was eight years old and I would play it over and over again. Imagine how annoying it was for my parents to have an eight year old walking around the house singing ‘love me like a rock now baby” over and over again.

The point of all this is that I grew up on rock and roll and blues and I always thought that my musical tastes would remain within the realm of rock, blues and all the similar derivatives

What to do with your mussels??

February 1st 2012 20:22
Working in IT can sometimes be such a thankless job. Last week was one of those chaotic times when I needed to do major upgrades to our online portal. I spent 7 straight hours staring at a screen....make that three screens!! Finally when everything was up and running the first email I get after three whole minutes of being back online...is....”I don’t like the new icons”???

Great!! Thanks for your support and encouragement. I guess in the IT world you know that you are doing a good job when you don’t hear from anyone. The no news is good news saying applies here

This was a great post. I started reading about your experience with Hubpages since I was considering switching from Orble to them. I think I will stay with Orble now.

For me I personally liked the look of the Hubpages website compared to Orble. it just seemed more professional. I guess looks can be deceiving.

It seems quite difficult to find real writng jobs online.

Sounds like a great recipe. I'm not big on the Tofu thing so would you recommend substituting the tofu for shrimp or chicken?

Thanks

I have the same question. Why is there not a drop down menu to change the display time from form GMT to Eastern standard?

This would be a nice option.
