UNITED v WATFORD MATCH PREVIEW

January 31st 2007 20:51

Manchester United v Watford

Wednesday 31 January 2007 20:00

RONALDO AND ROONEY RETURN

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney both returned for Manchester United as the Barclays Premiership leaders looked to consolidate their six-point lead at the expense of rock-bottom Watford.

The young duo were two of five changes from the side that beat Portsmouth at the weekend, Kieran Richardson, John O’Shea and Gabriel Heinze the other men recalled, with Tomasz Kuszczak keeping his place in goal.

After successive victories in league and cup Watford faced the acid test of their revival but had to do without goalkeeper Ben Foster, Premier League rules preventing the on-loan United man turning out against his own club.

Manchester United: Kuszczak, Neville, Ferdinand, Vidic, Heinze, Ronaldo, O'Shea, Carrick, Richardson, Rooney, Solskjaer. Subs: Van der Sar, Brown, Park, Larsson, Silvestre.

Watford: Lee, Mariappa, Doyley, DeMerit, Stewart, Smith, Bangura, Francis, Powell, Bouazza, Henderson. Subs: Chamberlain, Kabba, McNamee, Hoskins, Williamson.

"NO NEW SIGNINGS"

January 30th 2007 22:59
Gill fails to shock anyone.

From the Guardian:

David Gill, Manchester United's chief executive, has said the club have virtually no chance of signing Owen Hargreaves before the transfer window shuts on Wednesday.

Following a board meeting last Thursday, Bayern officials suggested that, though there will be no deal this month, the transfer could go ahead in summer. On Friday Ferguson said he had not given up hope of landing Hargreaves in the next few days, but Gill is more pessimistic.

“I can confirm we are interested in the player and we have been since last summer but at the moment Bayern aren't willing to sell him and we will have to leave it at that,” Gill told BBC Radio Five.

Added to their failure to land Hargreaves, United have fallen behind Spurs in the race to sign Southampton's £10m-rated full-back, Gareth Bale. So it appears likely Henrik Larsson will be the only new face to arrive at Old Trafford this month.

Gill on Larsson staying:

“I know for a fact Alex, Carlos and all the players are very impressed with Henrik in terms of what he can do, his attitude and how he has fitted in. We want great players at the club but we have not really discussed that.

“We are focusing on the next few weeks and we will see what happens. I think it is a bit early, you never say never, but we will go through that nearer the time with Henrik and the club.”

ROONEY UP IN COURT

January 30th 2007 18:56
Wayne is possible witness in Granny libel trial.

From the Evening News:

Wayne Rooney may be the star witness in a libel trial involving a Merseyside grandmother suing a newspaper over claims she was a prostitute.

The Sun newspaper is being sued by Patricia Tierney, 50, after it claimed she had sex with the Manchester United and England star at a massage parlour in Liverpool.

Mrs Tierney a married mother-of-seven and grandmother of 16 says the allegations, published in August 2004, were false and have destroyed her life.

It is understood Rooney, 21, has been put on notice by the court that he may be called as a witness.

It would mean the footballer reliving his shame in public, after confessing he visited brothels when he was “young and stupid”.

However, if the lawyers for both parties agree an out-of-court settlement, Rooney would be spared giving evidence in the witness box.
