What’s your Attitude got to do with It?

Attitude: "It's our attitude in life that determines life's attitude toward us." Earl Nightingale

Attitude is everything. Attitude is the difference between Day and Night. Attitude will get you the job you always dreamed about. It will also cause you to lose your job. Attitude is all about your behavior around other people. It can be positive or negative. Positive attitude is the one you should strive for. Without the good kind, you may never amount to much.

If you want a good job or are just going to meet other people, you need to exhibit a positive attitude. This is where first impressions are so important. Few people like someone with a negative attitude. It is sort of like magnetism. Positive attracts and negative repels. If you don’t have that positive magnetism, you’re in for a ride down the slippery slope of no return. Change your direction and get up on that high horse. The sky is the limit if you are on the right train. Attitude can make or break you.

People with negative attitudes repel other people too. They just don’t want to be around a negative talking person. No one wants to hear putdowns and critical assessments of anyone, friend or foe, regardless if they agree or not. They may think it, but they don’t say it. An example of someone with a negative attitude usually does a lot of complaining about people, places and things and anything you can think of.

The person with a good attitude may be someone who is upbeat about people. He or she is happy about life in general. They may have just as much bad luck as the next person but they still can find something positive to say. Even bad luck can show us what not to do a second time.

At a job interview, if you exhibit any negativism about a former employer, boss or co-worker, it will insure that you won’t be offered the position. If you are complimentary about the company, the interviewer and positive about your past experiences, it makes you look good. Say something good and hold back on any negative thoughts you may have. Don’t express them ever. The job may be yours because the hiring manager will like you, provided you are well dresses, groomed appropriately and alert.

The idea that you show the best qualifications on paper only got you in the door. They won’t look again at your resume. If you see them looking at it, it only means they don’t understand why you’re there. No Job! While you are in an interview, you are selling yourself. You are the product that you are selling to a potential buyer. Think of the interview in those terms and you’ll do just fine. It has nothing to do about your having the right educational qualifications or not. Attitude is far more important than what you know! It is the body language and what comes out of your mouth that will make or break you.

Your attitude is the difference between a successful and happy career and a life of failure. It is not just in the workplace where you need to take care. It is how you act around your families. A bad attitude can drive your loved ones away if you don’t keep everything positive. If your outlook is negative, you better change it quick or check yourself at the door. Your attitude has everything to do with it.

You probably already know that the economy has changed and has become more global. Are you adapting to this new situation? Many of the textile and shoe industries have moved off shore. Thousands of other manufacturing jobs have gone to countries where laborers work for lower wages. High tech jobs have mostly stayed here. Unfortunately, not everyone has been retrained to move from manufacturing to biomedical and other high end jobs. Are you retraining for the new landscape and new opportunities?

Our politicians and business leaders may have thought we should share our wealth with the rest of the world. On the whole, it is an honest to goodness idea, but not in the best interest of their constituency. Americans are now suffering because of not enough jobs to go around. This lack of jobs has helped to keep salaries lower than they would have been in a more robust economy.

Until our congress starts working for the people who put them in office, we need to adapt to this new world disorder that we have before us. There are fewer jobs and more of you applying for those few positions. There needs to be more training programs for the unemployed and ways developed to upgrade skills for those high end jobs. You will need to improve your skills to meet the new marketplace. Make the product the best it can be. The product is you and you’ll need to sell yourself to your potential employer.

When I was an employer and manager, I liked people who came well prepared and had a good attitude. If you want a job, get prepared for it. Do your research and find the contact names that you will need to apply to the right people. Make phone calls to seek out the hiring manager's name. Sending a resume to human resources is a waste of time in my estimation. Those days are over for sending resumes to the wrong people and expecting to get lucky. It is high tech now but yet simple in that it is attitude that will get you into the desired occupational seat.

The right person to contact is a key point. This fact needs to be understood. It has been said by some that you need to be an actor to get your choice job. I don't really buy into that. People are too smart to fall for that ploy anymore. It is the attitude that you have that will shine through. This is hard to fake. Either you have what it takes or you don't. I'm going to believe that you can change your attitude permanently if you put your mind to it. Plan to turn it into a very positive one. It is a requirement, especially today. This is a key point if you want to be a success at anything. It is not just about finding a job.

Once you get your interview for a job, you'll have to possess a positive attitude and have a smile on your face when you arrive. Attitude is everything. If you so much as make a negative comment about any previous employment or employer, you won't get hired.

Do your research about the firm and the position beforehand. Know who you will be working for and the job requirements. It is a good idea to use some complements if possible. Dress accordingly and be neat and clean. Have some questions to ask the potential employer. Then ask for the job at the end of the interview, if you've done all these things. Hope you get that job and improve your attitude at the same time.

The management of an eating establishment takes careful understanding and attention to detail. The controls of accountability and efficiency are a necessary component in operating a restaurant. You need a plan of action for long range viability. Forget about not expecting a profit in the first year. Many people in the past thought they should expect to be profitable by as late as the fifth year. No, you want to be showing a profit by the end of the first year.

Watch your expenses constantly and calculate your total profit and sales at the beginning of your operation. Every day, the flow of income in and out of the business needs to be diligently analyzed. At the end of your first week and month especially, you need to be on the right track. You will be able to determine if you are doing the best sales and expense analysis initially. You don’t have any time to waste.

Experimentation as you go is a mistake. Have a good menu from the start. Hire the best staff possible and your food and beverage servings need to be adequate in size, price and quality. If you are not heading the kitchen preparations, you may have to hire a good chef. Make sure you don’t over-hire your wait staff. You better be ready to take an active part in the operation regardless of your specific duties. Your hours are going to be long, especially at the beginning or setup period. You can’t afford to make mistakes.

Customers can be brutal if not satisfied. Most are understanding but a few can hurt your business if they don’t believe they got their money’s worth in your establishment. Make sure your staff is friendly and efficient as well as clean and neatly dressed at all times.

Consistency of products served to your clientele is all important. I may be one of the few who rate this issue as your number one task. A customer should be able to get the same item prepared in the same way as they were served on a previous visit to your restaurant. It is very possible that the same satisfied customer that received their meal for the last ten times satisfactorily, on the eleventh visit could receive an unfavorable one and won’t return. People only remember the one meal they didn’t like. You need to make sure they are always satisfied and you maintain the same level of service and product quality.

Many owners will buy lower cost product to increase profitability. You need to maintain high quality no matter what the situation. Maintain consistency of product to produce quality meals for your customers. It is this fact that will determine if you are a successful entrepreneur. You have managed to create an ongoing eating establishment with a reputation of quality and success.
